Sharp GF-9696 ~ what is the red button on the left?

I know the price of this box is a discussion topic of and within itself, especially since its missing the battery cover and the tape deck doesn't work.... but take a close look at the very left side, next to the sliders... See the unusual looking red button?

What the hell is that???

Looks like a mod to me. Any ideas?

Definetly looks like a mod. I have had buttons like that from radio shack. That one is huge! Def, not original.

Yep noticed that too, it's has to be a custom mod which should further devalue the box because the top panel is permantly modded from original.

yep, that button cost around $3.99-$5.07 when I last saw one, that box is a goner but would make for an excellent donor if it was priced nicely

if it was priced nicely but it's priced way over what a parts box should be. To be fair $100 to $200 for a parts box would be about the limit in my book but to some it may be worth more, I guess it all depends on how bad you want the parts.

yeap i have one but it does not have that red button ,, mine is missing the handle battery cover and grills but the box works good and it only cost me 45.00 so it was suppose to be a parts box but if i could find all the parts that are missing i would have a complete one ,, that one would be in the 150.00 to 200.00 but even that is pushing it

The seller states that the button is the on/off switch. The GF-9696 already has an on/off switch - it's the knob on top to the right of the mic input. Another great box that someone butchered.

In the scope of things this is all on the seller anyway. If he wants to sell it he will have to drastically cut his price but if he is just trying to make a big score then he's on the right track. No problem for us as we simply won't buy it, in fact I find it kind of entertaining to watch it and see what happens if anything at all.

I think it became necessary because the prev owner didn't have the expertise to fix it right. Always-on issues are very common on boomboxes. Ironically, rarely is it ever the power switch that has failed. So the easiest way to remedy this short of pulling the cord is to drill a new hole and install a cheesy non-matching switch so it can be shut off!

I"ve drilled a hole to add a switch on a collectible Sanyo that I'll post about someday. Not as a bypass to correct a defect. Rather, to add a light feature. Not everyone will agree with this but I believe it's done tastefully and I never intend to sell this boombox.

(1) Dial-light switch replacement......

(2) Press-here-to-travel-back-to-the-80s.......

(3) Self-destruct button. After all, it is bright red!!
