** Sharp GF-9090 speaker grill mod **

Hi Guys,

Scotty came over today with a 'parts' GF-9090 that we planned to rob some tape heads/cables from for my GF-9494. Turns out the plug to the circuit board has slightly larger terminals on the 9494 so there went that plan.

Anyway, I said to Scotty that if the 9090 parts didn't suit the 9494, I'd give it a quick freshen up. As you would agree, it's too good a box to be a parts unit. It does have a faulty Mono/Stereo/Stereo Wide switch though that no amount of switch cleaning will fix. Anyway, I rebuilt the tape deck and at Scotty's request, I removed the plastic speaker grills to see what the speakers would look like naked. Turns out the grills just sit loose between the speakers and the front case so removal was easy:

There is a very noticeable improvement in sound output and quality too with the plastic grills removed.

I'll post a 'Parts Wanted' thread for a GF-9090 switch panel and a GF-9494 tape head/cable.

James.... :-)

Woah, I have one that I bought and gave up on before I figured out how much difference a good clean out makes. I may have to do the same.

some mesh grills and chrome caps would really make sweet , i really never like leaving the speakers exposed and vunerable unless they are made to take the beating . these are sweet boxes .

I thought that, but then if you fit the mesh grilles to it this would look just the same as any other GF-9090 and thae amazingly white cones would look grey through the grilles.
The mesh grilles don't have the same trim on them by the looks of things, checking my 9090 (shewn below this post), its trims are flush with the face of the front panel but on that one with the moulded grilles, the trim rings appear to sit slightly proud.

How about some womens hosiery products as a substitute for the plastic grilles on the OP's set? :-D

A "normal" 9090 seen recently in a room not far from here:

I'd offer to swap for the plastic grilles but would they even be interchangeable given the difference in the surrounding trim?

Hi! Any chance anybody can point me in the right direction for speakers on a Sharp gf9090?......Im thinking new old stock or if thats too far fetched putting new style speakers in from off of the shop shelf . I've just picked up what I thought was a perfect box but the right main speaker is no good and do intend on a fair amount of bass going through the unit . Any advice would be appreciated loads thanks Andy.
