Segway info please

Does anybody here own, deal in or have any first hand knowledge
of Segway's ??
After finally having a chance to ride one when i was recently on
holidays i have been considering buying one and importing it to
Australia.
I have read about how expensive parts can be and how to consider
poor battery life on a used model so i guess really i think it may be
a safe option to buy new.
If anyone has any info that would be fantastic thanks :yes:

light electric vehicles are a losing proposition.
i can promise you that you will have more downtime with it than you might believe.
i have never owned a segway but as a long time user of light electric vehicles. such as electric mopeds and bikes,i spent more time fixing them than riding them.
at one point i had a 120 volt electric bike. i ran it off a inverter coupled to a pair of car batteries .
the thing was extremely fast heavy as hell,until i mounted the power supply in the trailer.
that bike grew out of three thousand dollar electric bike designed by a company run by lee iaccoca.
of course when people could not get parts for them the company went broke and people ended up fixing their bikes on there own.
doing customizations.
segways are a pretty cool design but i think everything on them is proprietary and you cant really make changes to them.
back when the technology was being designed the inventor was going to apply it to a wheel chair that could climb stairs.
the segway was touted as the biggest thing since the wheel when it first was being shown.
even bill gates called it the most amazing invention he had ever seen in his life.

the newer models might be better than the originals. however the possibility of a face plant is still very real and well levs still crap out on a regular basis.
i mean when a lev is working its really fun when they dont its a real drag.
i guess thats why my levs are all sitting in the shed right now. in the end i just bought a real bike and rode it.
it was faster had a longer range and well a hell of a lot cheaper.

And thanks also for the write up Bill. This is pretty much what
im trying to determine, things such as after sales support, access
to replacement parts etc and life span of a Segway.
Lets face it, they are not cheap :no: :no:

it has been a while since being on the segway page but i just went there.
wow not much has changed since the inception of the vehicle.
12.5 mph is actually slower than what a average person can pedal a bike at.
24 miles range. that is really pushing it i mean you would have to travelling on pretty much flat terrain .
i just am not seeing the value.
to be honest segways are kind of known for being as costly per kilometer to operate as a exotic sports car.

the electronic components are too fragile -
and they easily burn out under any stress -
like a fat guy going uphill --
or 2 skinny broads :-)
or any full throttle starts --will break the controllers --

my own electric scooters and bikes have all been built with the most
simple //durable tried n' true components-
they have NEVER failed ::: :-O :thumbsup:

one heavy duty outdoor motor - 12 v
one big 12v gel-cel battery
one marine brass 50 amp on/off switch
3 -- # 8 gauge wires
thats it :cool: :surf:

ira is one the right track.
make your own ele and save thousands go faster further and have way more fun
