Hey all, first post.
Like a lot of people, I had one of these as a teenager. Picked one up off of ebay, lister was 100% truthful as far as it's condition. I took it to a shop to fully restore, and the last thing they need is a capstan motor. It is apparently quite unique and not used on many decks. They have everything else fully restored/cleaned/working, this is the only thing holding them up.

They have bought and tried three different motors so far with very similar part numbers, none were compatible. They even, very painstakingly, re-wound the copper in my motor, but the results were an unsteady playback.

I'm open to ANY info - if you have a cross-reference list of what other decks had that motor, motor specifications, cross-part numbers, anything!

Any help is greatly appreciated. You can reply here, or directly to my email, jim2017@comcast.net.
Thanks!

Hello. You will need a service manual for the unit. This will have the capstan motor listed as a part number.Should be able to find a replacement that is suitable. Some Pioneer home stereo cassette decks also used a specific motor that worked with the logic system, there was no way around it. As to rewinding the copper in the motor, that is nearly impossible, it is done in increments by a precision robot. If they are able to do that , that is an incredible first ever feat. Good luck.

The part numbers given to motors in service manuals are only brand-specific stock numbers and won't contain anything useful for tracking down a new one. Unfortunately, the Big Ben's main motor is a special type that allows variable speed, so it's rather difficult to source. I'd love to be proven wrong!

A friend found a decent replacement, will ask him to post up.
Edit: Source only had a few available sadly.
Just put a replacement in without variable, at least deck will be working.
