Remember those oldschool electronics stores?

You've all seen the pictures on the boombox museum site.
The small mom and pop electronics stores from the 80s that would display the fabulous boomboxes of the day in the front window. Today they are mostly all gone, dwarfed by the shadow of giant electronics stores like Circuit City.
Today I saw one hanging in there.
I can see this store in the eighties full of amazing boxes and alot of cheapies for the average income.

Unfortunately you can see the depressing change to garbage eggs in this window, even the garbage boxes were cool looking back in the 80's.

seriously i have had good luck doing this at music stores. why not your electronics store. does not hurt to ask the answer is probably no but some times its yes.

Still,... you know, the only thing that messes up that scene in "Do The Right Thing" is the fact that he turned up the "Mix Volume" - which has no effect on the regular volume of the box whatsoever - instead of the actual "Volume" level on the opposite side of the EQ. Maybe Bill Nunn should've gotten himself familiar with the box before he acted out that scene.

But i´m still afraid this old shop will die soon.

I remember all those cool electronics shops on Howard St, before they are turned into beeper stores.

My 3rd boombox was from a store like this. There were like 3 of them within one block of each other.

Inspired by this thread, i did a short trip to "radio Suppin" today and took a few pics:

This window is nearly looking same like in the 80s.
Bought there my first digital watch, and later some others

The most crazy thing is:
When the big electronic trust COSMOS opened near the radio shop, everybody thought the litte shop will close down soon.
Since last week COSMOS is bankrupt and close down forever next week.
SUPPIN still survived!

How ironic that you mention this! One of our major office supply stores, Office Depot, is currently running a TV commercial with the same theme... only using competing barber shops instead of electronics stores.

The owner of a small, neighborhood barber shop is afraid he'll go out of business when a chain store moves in, but he saves so much money by being creative and buying his supplies at Office Depot that he hangs in there. Meanwhile, the big, fancy chain store goes out of business and the neighborhood store survives. Exactly what you've described with Radio Suppin and Cosmos.
