so i ventured out last week and saw a stack of really cool looking rc helicopters on for half price at a place around here.
i was not going to do it but hey curiosity got the better of me.
so i paid my 125 bucks and walked out with a super cool big toy helicopter. recommended ages 14 plus so i figured how much of a challenge could it be.
i charged up the battery and went out into the huge field behind my house.
btw it was 1030 at night when i decided to do this. no worries i will just take it up for a quick spin and set her down.
so i turned it on and turned on the transmitter. about two dozen leds began flashing all over the thing. great this will make it easy to see.
obviously some strange creatures took offence to me being in there field and all kinds of wierd shrieks came from the trees around there.
birds i cannot recall hearing before.
so i pulled back on the stick and the heli came to life. i wondered how much i should pull back but kind of just took it easy to see what would happen. straight up it went. up and up and up. i am guessing it was close to about 100 feet up by the time i decided this is fun but i cannot tell what is front or back at this point. the lights were really cool but hey the thing looked the size of one of those micro helicopters at that point.
i just hovered there and took the plung and decided to fly forwards a bit. unfortunately a gust of wind blew the helicopter well quite fast and quite far. i could see the 300 foot range rapidly coming to a end and decided to land the thing. i walked across the field and fortunately the led lights guided me right to where i had landed it. ok so this is going to be fun. i will go to bed and charge it up the next morning and fly it in the day time.
off i went to bed.
the next morning i woke up. it was a little windier but the box said it could be flown in moderate winds.
after my experience the night before i figured i would just let her rip and sail off into the clouds.
well that sucker just bolted right up and well over a hundred feet up. higher than any tree in site and there is alot of trees around where i live. the helicopter looked almost like a bee at this point. i had control over it but.........
moderate winds at ground level soon become high winds at altitude without the benefit of things like buildings and trees around.
soon the fight was full on to bring the thing down and keep it under control.
i managed to get it to hover about thirty feet over a house a few hundred feet from the park.
when i say hover what i really mean is i had it at full throttle to go forwards but the wind was keeping it at bay and by this time my batteries were coming to the end of thier charge.
the wind stopped for a moment causing the heli to lurch forwards and finally i had some control. that was until i saw the power lines that i had spent so much time making sure werent there before appeared in the scene.
a spastic attempt to dodge them concluded in the helicopter pirouetting across the road way like some kind of drunken barishnikov ballet dancer a few feet from the roof of a passing bus. i did not care much at this point because the thing was now close to my drive way and if i could get it there all would be fine.
i had now walked fully out of the park and was standing right in my yard.
the chopper fought hard to escape my control again.
nearly entering the open window of my landlord upstairs. the batteries now decided to give up the ghost and by some luck i was able to put the thing down on the driveway without much more of a issue.
this entire event only lasted about ten minutes but seemed so epic.
of course i thought about it a few momments then through the thing back on the charger and planned the next flight.
a few hours passed and the time came for it to soar again. this time i would make sure i was way way way way way aways from anything like a street and i was sure it would be fine.
i went back out into the back yard. launched the sucker and thought i wonder how high this thing can go. i got to the point where i was having trouble seeing it and then....
chaos i saw a tiny speck of black fly off the chopper and the thing just went all haywire. there was only one thing i could think of and it turned out to be correct.
one of the blades had actually come off of the thing..
the helicopter plumetted in spining whirling dervish dance. i thought great all i need now is a kid or a dog or a old woman pushing a shopping basket . fortunately there was no one there.
the helicopter seemed to recover a little at one point and stopped plumetting but still spun violently and i slowed down the throttle and was able to land it.
i was a bit dissapointed. sure it was a adventure but for 128 dollars for 20 minutes i thought there is much better fun to be had than that.
the chopper was picked up turned off and i walked back towards the house.
on the way i found the blade from the rotor....
so i took it all in and put the blade back on. i managed to find a exact match for the screw in my box of bits from my slot car tracks.
i boxed it all up and put it so it looked the way it came from the store and headed back to return it.
the place i bought it from is pretty good with taking thrings back so i had my money back with no issues at all.
so the moral of the story is rc helicopters are amazing but i think it is wise to walk before you can run and to go small before you go large.
man tho when they are working they are a lot of fun.
