Thanks for the confirmation old friend. Truth is, the 2198 I have was very nice before I made the changes, but sounded craptacular when pushed due to the cheesy speakers. Plus the gray plastic had turned into that nasty green,gray,yellow hue that time bestows on many a boomer. The cleanup, paint job and speaker mods do wonders to improve the box.
It is well worth it to take a stab at restoring one, even if you don't mod it. The one TRC has for sale, as I said before, will not blow the walls out of a room, but sounds very nice for what it is and if you want a project box it's a fine candidate and repairs are easy peasy if needed for the deck.

I say this so there are no unrealistic expectations. Keep in mind as well, that the 2198 version was the top of the line (based on what info I could find scouring around) at that time for Sears. (It has Dolby, music search, seperate phono and line in, etc.) But a Sansui it is not. Look at the speaker housing I took a picture of and it will tell you all you need to know.
