Quiet house

I'm in a bit of a quandary. My wife and I enjoy going to live shows together, which is great. :-D But at home, she never really likes to have any music or radio on unless it is something pretty mellow, like classical, lite jazz, or acoustic folk.

Alone in the car, or at home, I like to have something on almost all day. (I work afternoons and evenings; she's home most of the time). I like to skip around from one musical genre to another, Beatles to Brahms to James Brown to Thelonious Monk to Grandmaster Flash. When I get tired of music I switch to news/talk radio, and back again.

So, what can I do? I respect her need for quiet, but do I need to build a "man cave" in the backyard, to which I can retire when I need to jam out to something more hard-edged? Any other ideas? (She dislikes how the boomboxes look, too, which I why I don't really have a display of them anywhere; I keep them stashed away and take out one or two at a time; but that's a matter for another post).

That is quite a bit of a dilemma for a boombox lover :-/
And headphones are no option if you have a good-sounding boombox in my opinion. I mean you could directly switch to an iPod (ugh) then.
I do not know the architecture of your house so I do not know how much she is affected by your music...probably you could move your collection to the basement? :hmmm:
Normally that would be a good solution. You could put shelves up and create a Hobby-Room to finally display a great collection. And if your wife comes downstairs you can install curtains in front of them
Anyway, I would not lock them away...I wake up every morning looking at my little boombox wall and it makes me smile every morning :-) (Not to mention I get woken up by a boombox with built-in alarm-clock  ).
Maybe you can let her choose a song, too and then she can discover how great boomboxes are

in good weather -- outside --get a cheapo golf cart for comfort --
in less than good weather --your car//truck

its extra cool fun to be parked wherever you like the views

my 2 cents :-)

Time to build an addition so you can enjoy your music!
:agree: not only that sound proof it put in a toilet ,microwave and fridge and dead bolt lock the doors and put a peep hole in the door that way you never have to leave the room .

It's your house too right??
Tell her to leave for a while and then you can make al the noise you want.

Seriously, instead of spending a lot of money making additions, just take over a room in the house.

Unless the pants are to be found elsewhere.

I would say build a "man cave".

You want to jam out and you want to display your boxes somewhere. If you dont have that ability now.... get it!
I worked out a deal with my wife. If I built her a carport and a greenhouse, I could have the garage to do whatever I want. Definitely well worth the time, blood, sweat and money.

Compromise, certainly there is something that she does that you are not particularly interested in either.
Get involved with her in her interests and maybe she will opt to enjoy yours a little????
You guys do share a space so there has to be some common ground on how the space gets used.
Fair is fair.

Great set-up and collection, oldskool. :-D

Thanks to all for your helpful suggestions. Our place is too small for me to take over a whole room, and we have no basement, just a crawlspace. :sadno:

I think I will set up some multiple listening areas in different parts of the house, a few boxes here, a few there. A variation of what I do now.
