The M70 has always been my favorite boombox. The infatuation goes back to my teen years. It was a boombox I could not afford and when the boombox era ended I figured I would never have one. Then one day in 2008 I'm surfing Ebay and I see one for $100 bin. Needless to say I bought it immediately and the rest is history. I love the classic silver of the M70 paired with those blue woofers...but I always wondered why they only made silver, why not have a rainbow of colors? So I decided to do my own. I started with white, now I have blue, red, gold, original silver, and now black.

Damn Mel, that looks SWEET and you're right, why did they not make them in varying colors?

That could have easily come from the factory.

I know you took some time off from BBXY and I'm not sure I ever showed you my tribute to your multi-colored M70's.
The Eddie Van Halen M70

After that first West Coast Meet at your place and getting to see, among other things, your rainbow of M70's and how the M70 is the easiest radio to repaint do to the fact that the control panel with all the script comes off. I decided to go full Rocker on mine.

It didn't hurt that you did the red, white and blue in candy colors.

Any chance of a group photo?

A group photo is being done today. That Van Halen box looks like a lot of work went into it. Nicely done. I wasn't sure how black would turn out on an M70 so I decided to put as much black as possible and only keep silver where I had to. Painting the cassette door and tweeters helped the black flow across the front much better. Overall I think it turned out ok.

Yes, there is a nice balance going. I had to look closely to see where you had to go the extra mile. It came out great and very "Factory" looking.

Believe it or not the hardest part of this project was the cassette door. Sanding off the silver paint, then buffing the plastic back clear just to paint it black. But looking at it you would never know it's not factory.

I did notice that, because someone else painted their M70 black and it just didn't look right. Matter of fact I just about hated how it looked.... couldn't figure out why. Yours has the black handle and cassette door as well as black on the top panel.

Did you use black sharpie marker on the front metal JVC badge?

Seeing that one had me scared to paint one black. But I saw things I wanted to do differently so I went for it and I like the results. Getting rid of the silver is key for black to work on the M70.

That box now looks spectacular! You've done a good job with the finish, it looks like a factory model straight out of the box as well as having the appearance of being bang up to date. Congratulations on this wonderful project.  :hooray:

Your right Joe, just had another look and its just off the mark.

Its all in the details
Things I noticed on that other one is that the trim was in poorer condition, kind of like putting old dry-rotted tires on brand new rims. And it had white speakers which while it made them pop more, but was out of character for an M70 and of course the details. It's like stripping a car body before painting as compared to masking off to paint.. masking saves time but the results won't be as good as strip down first.

Good job Melvin. There's one thing I noticed about boxes that are repainted black.... they look smaller than before? Does anyone else think that? Nothing wrong with it, just a weird optical illusion I guess.

Yep, going the extra mile always pays off, like the Racoon Kaboom. You could have masked it off, but you torn it down to nothing and built it back up. And seeing it in person, it could have been a factory color.

It's hard to re-think / re-engineer a product that was really good to begin with and have it look better. In these cases, doing the extra work paid off.

I wonder how it would look if you added a couple pieces of faux-aluminum vinyl trim on each side of the tuner glass? It would create a complete square "frame" around the tuner.

why not real aluminum trim? Can buy them from hobby stores. They come in tiny sizes for hobbyist making miniature models. L, U, I, square and flat pieces are all available.
