I watch on occasion when nothing else is on. To me they are like any other pawn shop. The difference with them is that people bring what most consider junk. And even when it may be some "real" historical item they still jerk people over. When I hear them whine about losing money I just laugh.

If you were to take a boombox to a pawn shop you'd be a fool. You have better chances on eBay. To what I would bet are all pawn shops, a classic boomer is a piece of junk they may give $20-30 bucks for and then eBay it themselves. :-/

I see no reason why we couldn't have a show about boombox collectors. I mean, they have a show about backwoods, creepy cajuns in the bayou.

I say SINISTER gets the premiere episode and Boynton Beach gets the season finale.

The only thing they had that came close to a boombox was a 1963 Zenith Oceanic Model 3000 shortwave radio.

never and i mean never judge the value of ANYTHING you own by watching this show. i mean i can see the entertainment of this show, but i can also recognize the 21 pantomimes of a liar wich the boss displays unabashedly in each and every transaction he does.
while i do get a kick out that show i also look at it as a instruction manual why never to deal with them.
that zenith transoceanic he bought of the guy for 80 bucks would most likely go for three to four times that ammount at a radio show on a bad day.
the thing with a lot of that particular radio is the scrap gold content it holds would bring that seller more of he took it to a metal salvager than the pawn shop.
a 1963 trans oceanic always goes for a lot more on ebay.
i mean the pawn stars show is entertaining but i think that alot of the people selling things end up getting a pretty lame deal.
sure its fast and easy with no hassle but its also kind of throwing aways money. i think its better than giving true valuables to value village or other for profit thrift shops but to be honest that dude would more than likely have done much better throwing his transoceanic up on craigslist. he would easily have got two hundred bucks for it. maybe more.

Exactly bill, I would have given him 80 bucks on a bad day for that very nice piece.

I've posted this before but it bares saying again, pawn shop owners are heartless mongrel dogs that would sell there own mother for a profit, avoid at all costs.

Just off topic, we had one here a few blocks from where I am now, it was well known by all the junkies around town if you bought in goods you would get a hit of smack. Owner is now doing time.

there is so many contradictions in that show. i think the people coming in must receive some payment for being on the show as well. i mean i would not be on a tv show for free like that. its not pbs antiques road show lol.
i also find it to be pretty staged at times.
i do like seeing the old things coming in but i often fail to understand why any pawn shop owner would want to be in a show like that. i mean giving a dude a quarter or less often of somethings value .
the bosses laugh also makes me ill.i mean that is one of the classic pantomimes of a liar. laughing at innapropriate times. yeah the guy is a creep.
i have played the pawn shop game a few times to my advantage due to the ignorance of the owners. i have made the rounds with buddies who had there gear stolen and watched the bullshit fly when it showed up on the shelf of the pawnshop.

"here just take it and go" lol
"we did not know it was stolen the guy said he bought it new"
most of these guys laughed the exact same way as the guy in the tv show.

I learned long ago not to sell anything to a Pawn Shop, they are looking to buy at pennies on the dollar. Even buying can be tricky but occasionally you can get a good deal although, with the advent of the internet it has become much less likely and eBay really empowered them.

We don't have any of that here that I can tell.
The few Pawn Shops around me price everything near retail and don't budge much on prices, needless to say their inventory doesn't change much. In fact one of the larger one's has a wherehouse full of items that they eBay, they took me through it once when I was bidding on one of their items.

I love that show! It is quite entertaining.... I just wish they'd lose that Chumlee idiot. Seriously, would you keep him around as an employee?

That store has done so well in it's past it can afford to be on TV. Plus, it's in Vegas.... so I would imagine they get more traffic than ever from gamblers hocking their wares to feed that habit. That has got to be the holy grail of locations for any aspiring pawn broker.

For lazy or uneducated sellers to get a "quick" sale on their items, that place seems okay. I've seen them pay thousand$ out for items I wouldn't give pennies for. I think them being on TV as they are somewhat forces them to give more fair deals to those lazy buyers. And I bet it is easy for them to get people on the show for free. Think about it.... if you had an item of which you had no clue of its value or even where to begin researching it, much less how to actually sell it in order to extract that maximum value.... wouldn't you be inclined to go on TV for free in order to have it's value estimated by some of the "professionals" they bring? There is the possibility that those guys are fakes, thouth. But, I've seen plenty of weapons, historical and simply rare items that were featured on the show where the seller had obviously grossy understimated the value. And when they found out what they had they decided to keep the item. I say good for those people!

Also, they've been in the business so long that they more than likely have a huge network of antique dealers and specialty auction buyers such that they can extract maximum value for many of those very rare items.

I remember times before ebay when you could buy complete camera outfits with lots of lenses for pennies on the dollar. Or pick up a killer deal on a top quality stereo component. Yea, you had to be an informed buyer and be able to spot the good from the average from the bad..... But, the days of leveraging that knowledge are long gone. Now, the only places to leverage that kind of knowledge seems to be estate sales, yard sales or thrift stores. MB84 had it right.... as a whole I also think eBay has tremendously benefitted pawn shop owners. Most of the pawn shops I've been in recently have a PC right at their fingertips, ready to research the value of items coming in and for pricing of items for sale. As far as I'm concerned, pawn shops are really only good for power tools or maybe some cheap DVDs anymore.

That doesn't mean I don't still look, though...

I will say that I recently bought a pair of fully working Technics 1200's, with a low end Stanton DJ CD player, cheap realistic mixer, all in a Gemini Turntable coffin for $275. They even let me put it on layaway. I do think that was a great deal, but more the exception than the norm. When I get those decks home in a month or two, I'll clean up the gear, part that set out and at least double my money.

Now that I think about it, I also bought a Canon camera lens for DSLR for $40 which would have normally cost about $120. But, that took some major haggling while the pawn shop owner was hunting back and quoting the pricing range they were seeing for similar lenses on ebay. I had to explain the difference between "image stabilization" vs. a normal lens over and over and had given up. After I finally told them to "go ahead and sell it on ebay.... so you can deal with listing it, the ebay and paypal fees, and packaging it up for shipping and the potential BS from the buyer" had then turned to leave the store that the pawn shop owner finally stepped in and gave me the price I offered. LOL!
