Hey everyone, I posted a thread on this topic a couple years ago when the CD player started to go, but it has since stopped working entirely and recently I've spent a lot of time troubleshooting it and am getting desperate, so thought I'd try again and see if anyone might have some advice.
After lots of searching, I concluded that the issue was likely a dead laser, which is apparently a common issue with Panasonics of this era. I finally bit the bullet and dropped close to $80 on a new laser pickup from Ebay. This one.
I was able to install the new one, and also applied fresh lube (white lithium grease) to the worm gear and metal shaft, but the unit still wasn't reading discs. However, I was able to verify the following:
1. The spindle spun when I inserted a disc
2. The lens automatically slid along the track to get into the correct position when I held the lid latch down
3. The laser shifted vertically to adjust focus when I held the lid latch down
4. The unit could tell the difference between when a disc was inserted and not (it said "No Disc" if I held the lid latch down with no disc in place. If there was a disc, it would try to spin it)
From the above, I *think* I can surmise that there's nothing wrong with the spindle motor or the gears moving the laser, and the replacement laser is at least powerful enough to detect the presence of a disc. The Ebay store said it was brand new, but it showed signs of oxidation and wear, so it's a little sus.
Also sus: The laser didn't come with one of those anti-static solder beads you have to remove. The Ebay store said not all lasers do, and this one simply doesn't. Does that strike anyone else as odd, or is that legit? I've also heard of some lasers coming with a clip or pin instead of a solder bead, but this didn't have anything.
In desperation, I decided to tempt fate and try blindly tweaking the potentiometer. I painstakingly tried several different positions, but none helped, nor could I see any difference in laser brightness when looking through my phone camera (it was a tiny, tiny red dot in all cases).
I reached out to the store and told them it wasn't working despite much troubleshooting, and to my surprise they sent me a replacement with no fuss, but I just tried installing that one today, and…same result.
So, I'm at an impasse. Anyone have any advice, thoughts, suspicions? I don't want to mess with a pot again without an oscilloscope and someone who knows how to use one. I don't know where to take one of these things to get serviced in 2026. Desperate to turn this into a win. I guess I should also mention I did the line in mod on this boombox a couple years ago, and that still works fine, as do the tape decks and radio.
Well, thanks for reading.
