Hi, I'm new here and just want to say hello to all of you.

I started collecting boombox a short time ago and 've got 2 boxes so far. They are both National (panasonic) Rx-5400 and Rx-5700. Got the rx-5400 two months ago while the 5700 just arrived yesterday.

Here are some pics of them, sorry for bad quality photos :-D :

The Rx-5400:

The only thing missing is Tape speed control Cover. There are lots of scratches but it's never been opened and everything is working fine.

The Rx-5700:

It looks less shiny but more classic and antique to my taste :-)

The round knobs are the same in the two Boxes but Rx-5400's knobs are really shiny while those on Rx-5700 look matt and way less attractive

Them side by side:

They have almost the same width and height but the Rx-5700 are much thicker and heavier (4-5 pounds more I think). Both are very well built and solid like tanks.

Hope you enjoy these old Pannies. Will need help on some problems later

Cheer,

Thank you for the comments.

National was always my favourite Electronic manufacturer so I thought I should get start with some of their boomboxes. Luckily, there were plenty of used Japanese goods all over my country. Got those two for $35 and $70 not include shipping. Are these fair prices?

About the sound, I must say that I have very little knowledge of sound and audio equipment, but I would like to comment on their sound as I really love them. They sound almost the same. The bass is tight and deep but not pounding or powerful. The mid and high are very good, especially on the Rx-5700. The high are very crisp and clear. I don't have vocabulary to express, just mean to say their high are excellent  .

In overall, these boxes have beautiful sound, great treble and mid but a bit lack of bass. What's more? They're big and heavy but not powerful so they're definitely type of in-door box.

Btw, there's a problem with my 5700, sound produced by the Left speaker is noticeably louder than which come from the Right speaker. I have switched between radio, tape and phone in but that problem keeps happen  . Maybe any of you guys know what cause that problem and how to deal with it? Any suggestions should much be appreciated. Thanks  .

Awesome!!! As for the MS on 5700 the mechanical buttons spring mechanism usually gets week. I used an extra spring on outside of mechanism to help with excellent luck

Wow, way to start collecting! Those are two of the best looking Panasonic's IMHO. The 5400 just grabs me everytime I see one. Just a classic design that looks like the control panel straight out of early NASA. The more knobs and buttons the better!

Welcome!

Thank all, I am from Vietnam, 3 hours of driving from Hanoi capital.

Bill, thank for the infomation but I don't know where the spring is located in your picture, could you point it out. And how about open the box, is it easy enough for a newbie like me?

K2j, I also think those are good deals, actually I would have paid less for the 5700 if I had known the problem with the sound level and tape speed  The seller didn't tell me about them.

Lasonic, I love the look of the Rx-5400 too, very classic and elegant. Those shining speaker edges are so beautiful.

Anyone have ideas about the diffenrence in sound level of two speakers? Thanks.

The first thing to do is open it up and clean the switches. The function switch and record bar are the ones I tend to go for first. I'm not sure how accessible they are in that particular box though. Hopefully you can reach them simply by taking the back off.
