Thanks Triple-B! :smooch:

Well, maybe 1 of you Bass-BoX GURUS can help me out here. Can you tell me what's worng with this boomer? Everything works well but the tape deck need belts. The photos should give you a clue as to what doesn't fit:

Read the badge closely. It's your first clue.

A goofy AM/FM Selector:

I think this position is actually AM:

This position is actually FM:

Notice anything OFF about the tuner dial?:

the 'Tone' & 'Balance' controls are actually 'BASS' & TREBLE' & work perfectly as such:

The last clue should give it away. When I press the 'Tape/Radio' function switch, the DOLBY light goes on & off.

Other than that, the sound is full, loud & somewhat enjoyable for both radio & line-in. The tape deck needs new belts but working well mechanically. The cabinet is in absolutely excellent shape & near mint except for 2 small blemishes, including a tuner window scratch I'm trying to buff out. All lines are clean & straight with no patches or cracks I can see. I'm gonna try a re-belt & cleaning to see if I can get the deck going. In the meantime, can anyone solve this riddle? I bet it's easy for some of you to guess what happened to this beast.

cheers!!

Someone changed tuner scale :hmmm: one thing I will say about deck but I'm not sure about 8000 series but 9000 series usually needs a new capstan tire. We usually use a thin rubber fuel line from gas power radio control cars. What happens is it usually gums up and is hard to clean up. Like I said though I never had an 8000 series but all 9000 are like this. Good luck

Nice Sharp :-D

If it does suffer the gooey capstan issue its not that bad to sort as I've had to do all of mine.

But what I'm most impressed by is that you've done 300+ postings and only had one boombox! tho clearly that one is a good one!!!

Seems to me like the internals are a different box to the case. Either way, it's unusual

Trippy. What is it actually? I thought 8787 had separate bass/treble too not tone? This is one of the last boxes I expected to see as your 2nd...

Careful buffing out the aluminum it will wear down before it buffs out.

Think Dave might be right there...the buttons performing a different function than it says, the fm/am selector not quite lining up...suggests what Dave says

BINGO!!! If my guess is correct, this 8787 is really an 8989 on the inside. If anyone has a good photo of an 8989 to compare to, please post it to the thread but I'm almost sure it's a GF-8989 in an 8787 cabinet. The case is in excellent shape with all the edges & lines in mint condition. The cassette door is pretty minty too. It's actually the acrylic tuner window that has the scratch so it should buff out almost completey. The tuner switch is 4 position for AM, SW1, SW2, FM & all 4 bands work like the tuner scale suggests, which of course is the clincher to the mystery.

This is a photo of a Gf-8989-II that another Boomboxery member scored. As you can see, the silver dial, 4 band tuner, BASS & TREBLE, etc. are the same as mine. So it's gotta be an 8989-II in an 8787 cabinet. :-D

Well, I'm tinkering again & loving the GF-8787 which turned out to be an 8989-II. This is in ALPHA stage & I'm still experimenting with positions, etc. so stay tuned for more.

WARNING!!! EXTREMELY LOUD VIDEO!!! Turn down your speakers before playing VIDEO below:
