Finally I've found a head demagnetizer!...been after one for ages as opinion seems to suggest they can make quite a difference to tape playback. Did my regular trawl of the local charity shops during my lunch break (which usually nets me zilch) and found this Maxell HE-44...does anyone have one and is it any good? :-)

I've got the box and instructions too (not pictured)

That's much the same as the one I use, mine is a Winfield (from Woolies, remember them?) one. Just be sure & remove the button cell when you're not using it, I didn't and had some serious cleaning up to do in there though it did survive.

The one downside to this type is that all they can do is demagnetise the record/playback head and not any of those millions of tiny wee screws that became magnetic when they got dropped and rolled into contact with a speaker that was on the other side of the bench. It happens.

But yes, just demagnetising the head should keep the sound good and crisp and I'm sure that you're more careful than I when it comes to leaving sources of magnetic fields lying around. :-)

Ah good old Woolies...much missed! I just need to find which boxes sound a bit muffled on tape...gone thro a few and they sound crisp already...I'll stick it in the tool box ready for when it's needed. Thanks John :-)
