Hello All-

I bought a Telefunken Studio 1M and the deck does everything very slowly. This is how it was when I purchased it 4 months ago. The seller told me to find BOBBY, who is the moderator of the Boombox Service Manual Section. Bobby, could you please read?!

I was hoping the deck problem might be a loose belt. The drive belt didn't seem overly loose but I'm replacing when they are mailed to me next week. I've provided a link below where I show some pictures and ask my questions on Stero2Go. I'm curious at what other potential common problems could be causing the deck to play so slowly. Someone mentioned the gears could be worn. I've provided some photos and my understanding of how the deck mechanism works (on Stereo2GO link). I probably need someone to correct me in some way. I'm at a stopping point, and any help would be much appreciated!

i really want to do this myself but if someone is near Northern California that would want to help maybe I could pay for some services...if all else fails.

Bobby is member Fatdog. You probably should ask your questions in the forum rather than bother him directly. He seems rather busy nowadays and I don't recall he even has a studio 1.

Did you try adjusting the motor? Most motors have a speed adjustment screw.

Pinch Roller.jpgMotor Speed Adjust.jpgPhoto 1.jpgPhoto 4.jpgPhoto 6.jpgThanks BBB.

The pinch roller is perfectly circular and there are no cracks. It does look like it is in good condition as far as I can tell....so let's hope it is the belts.....which arrives in 3 days. See the pinch roller picture and I'd like to see if you concur.

One other item I am familiar with is the speed adjustment on a capstan motor. I have this hole on the back on the motor which has a thin plastic "sheet" over it. See the photo. I tried sticking jewelers screwdrivers and allen keys. I can't tell if anything is turning down there....but with the jeweler screwdrivers a couple appear to be "catching" very lightly. I won't be able to tell until I get the belt. Any idea if this is for speed adjustment? Is righty, faster or slower (righty tighty)? Will it continue to turn in either direction infinitely...because mine doesn't seem to hit a point where the screwdriver won't continue in a both directions?

So that I can get her plugged back in to test the deck, I need to clamp these two plastic "columns" shown in the picture below. They somehow connect (from the front) into a board. I've shown a couple pictures giving you an idea how it attaches, and a zoomed in photo of the area (to the best of my ability). Do you have any ideas? I did't take photos of this area before I undid it...like a dummy. They just slipped / unclipped very easily. I can't find any help on this.

Service manual is of no use.

Many thanks for your input.

Reli....I missed you msg. Do you know what kind of speed adjustment screw is typical....or maybe even know what is required for this specific model.

From what I see the pinch roller is very dirty and possibly dried out. Rubber over years dries up and will slip when pulling tape between capstan. This is one of the biggest issues next to dried stretched belts and dried up tires causing the tape to play slow

How do you go about finding a replacement pinch roller for any deck? I assume you can buy aftermarket (or I hope). I will clean the pinch roller with soap/water....that seems to be the most highly recommended means of cleaning. I would love to be able replace that pinch roller as well.

The drive belt that came in today has a perimeter that is only 0.1 inches less then the old belt. The width is about 33% wider. I'm not going to try to rebelt until next week (back packing trip coming up).

Also, any idea if the motor has a speed adjustment given the photo? Is an allen screwdriver (jewelers) most common? Have you seen Allen Keys required for adjusting motor speed?

Thanks,
MT

Yes motor has the adjustable resistor for speed. Using tiny screwdriver to adjust through hole in back
