Lasonic 975 auto reverse acting weird

So, the problem is that deck B always pops from ploaying forward into playing reverse in the middle of tapes. After working the program button and play a while, it works somewhat but is not reliable.
It always worked so far and this is the first time it occurs.
Has anyone here had similar problems?
And most important, could this be just a loose belt in there? Because if it is only a loose belt, I am relieved. I hope it does not go into the small pieces of the tape mechanism and auto reverse... :-/ .
Oh, reverse plays fine btw but I actually would like it to be fully working as it should since it worked like that before! :-/

Thanks a lot for your help!

It's been playing fine now all the time since I posted the issue...it is so weird.
Like an engine that has to heat up before it fully runs... :hmmm:

Ideas welcome.

It might be the actual cassette in combination with loose belts. Sometimes the tape (after a lot of FWD and REW) will create ridges as it spools and will increase resistance to spinning. If the belt is too loose and the cassette seems to resist spinning, the player might think it is at the end of one side and switch to the other. That is where I would start with my prognosis.

Thanks for the idea - the problem is I had the deck running without a tape in it and it would do the same thing.
Then, after a while, I started to work longer and now it eventually worked fine again.

I had the idea of some grease in some spots maybe? To reduce friction at certain parts?

Actually a TRC975 owner would have to jump in who had the same problem... :-/ .

You, know I can live it...but it seems to be something easy to fix since it worked again now.
I will check again tomorrow to see if it stopped working. Then it is most likely some friction somewhere I guess   :hmmm:

This Lasonic is a freakin' DIVA.

It played fine all the time and now it decided it was time to get my attention again by clicking in auto reverse :annoyed: .

Fatdog, I am just trying your idea - I am letting and empty tape run through it....nope...just clicked too.
I am annoyed with this. :-/

Ghost in the machine!

Hmmm. Check the belts for looseness or even deformities. Have you changed the belts previously on this box? If the belt slips at all it might trigger the auto-reverse.

I have not done anything with the belts on this box...I have seen it is only two belts - one giant one and a rather small one.
Actually it looks really easy to change. I already threatened the Lasonic with opening it up again if it doesn't stop with this  .

Madonna plays fine right now...but I am just waiting for the click actually... :-/

This machine is tricky...always when I just sit down, it clicks...and I bet like when I post this, ti will click into auto reverse in that very moment

Okay - last diagnosis for today: It's the belt.
Why I think so? Well - on high speed setting, the problem did not occur at all, I guess it is because the belt somehow accquires more firction in high speed.
So I guess I will be doing a belt change on this quite soon.
But I think before that I am going to get new Lasonic old stock graphics and then the chrome rings aroudn the speakers will get a bath and the grills might bet a new black paint coat. :-)
Well, restoration is never complete  .
Thanks for your help and support, Bobby  :thankyou:

:-D

Be sure and take pictures of the process for changing the belt. It can be a great resource for current / future 975 owners.

Today...it decided to work just as it should  .

Still it smells like a belt-change has to follow  .

But i have another box coming that will probably get my attention first. :-P

I would agree with Bobby and change your belts. This box is a very easy belt change compared to the 1st edition lasonic trc931 :-D good luck
