Greetings,

I've been cleaning up this beast and I am now focused on the cassette door. It will not open on it's own but will with a little help. I tried exercising the door carefully but it is not getting any better. Looks like there is an arm that attaches to the door on the right side. The arm goes in the chassis somewhere but the arm is definitely the culprit.

Any hints on how to get to the damper mech and how to free it up?

It's likely a cylinder that is filled with grease which provides the damping action. The grease has probably gotten hard and sticky. You'll have to clean and repack it with fresh grease to restore it's smooth feel. You can't do that without disassembling the unit, and for that, a service manual will be very helpful. Also while you can eventually get the chassis loose and out by wiggling it enough, putting it back is a whole 'nother story. Getting everything lined back up as you shoehorn it in is a a b***ch.

Well that explains why the only videos I can find on this unit cut to when he has the guts out of the chassis not showing how he extracted it (or what screws to tackle) and once the repairs were done he leaves out the reassembly. I can visualize your description of shoehorning. It appears that removal requires removing the correct screws, kicking the bottom out and removing on an angle. I can also imagine lining up all the top buttons and sliders as well as the side panels to reassemble. Looks like a decent obstacle course for sure.
