hey guys,
been doing my window shop on evilbay, and i cant help noticing the large amount of crap thats on there (uk)-by that i mean cheap quality stuff-and the prices people are asking for them!  a sharp gf4747 for a buy it now of 50 quid????i bought a panasonic rx5600 a couple of years ago for 40 pounds delivered!!!!and in my book theres no comparison between these to mentioned boxes-and thats just one example-has boombox collecting gone mad?and the 400 pound gf555 that member deliverance on s2g has posted up the other day?the 555 is good but i wouldnt pay 100 for one in its box, totally mint with all instructions and wiring diagram!
here in blighty its getting ever hard to spot boxes in the wild nowadays, and i fully blame ebay for this-and now if your forced to buy from ebay because you cant find them in the wild your forced to pay way over the odds for worthless crap!!!!i cant wait for the first box to turn up on ebay uk for £1,000,000!!!!its got to happen soon-its a matter of time!!!!

I agree.
We should not let boombox collecting become a hobby for the riches  .
A box is worth what the buyer is ready to pay, yes. But who are the buyers? We are.
The market got out of hand and many people see a good buck to be made.
I hope that madness is only a phase that will pass.

I agree with your soapbox rant  . I'm UK and I fail spectacularly in terms of finds in the wild so I'm stuck with the dreaded eBay. I look on eBay all the time and its hilarious what some people think cheap boxes are worth. Plus sellers just copy each other so if some hopeful puts a cheap box on at a silly prices others obviously think thats what its worth so they all start putting that model on for a silly price. You see it really often with ones like the 555 which are big but pretty cheap because they're fairly common...you regularly see them at £100 BIN but they never sell...I bought my 525 which is the prettier version for £16! I hate it when you see a box you'd really like but its up for a silly price...I'm often tempted just to message them to tell them they'd never sell it at the price their asking but I don't think they'd really appreciate the advice so I don't bother!

Its not just the prices, there seems to be a real lack of quality on ebay UK.

I think this is very true. I have not been collecting for that long, but it seems those that have genuine interest / love for a given market are the ones that appear to lose out. There is a seller in europe that currently has a damaged, operationally defective GF-666 for £400.00.....I would be thinking hard about any box for that price / condition.

Like all markets that may or do go into bubbles, you see some crazy prices. There is a book by Charles Mackay called 'Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the madness of crowds' that deals with this behaviour..........

Coming back home to our beloved subject, our best thing is to keep our hands in our pockets, hope that newbies pass by forums like this before getting to the epay monster, that way we can starve the beast.....a little. :-)

Just my 2c as well.

Cheers

thanks for all the comments guys-we can only hope that the situation changes and people selling stuff on ebay come to their senses and offer prices to match the item they are selling....sure,if its a mint gf777 you can ask 3 figures-but that kinda stuff should be in this 3 figure price bracket, not cheapo or crap condition/quality stuff that at best isnt worth the time
hey northener, whereabouts are you in yorkshire :hmmm:

In good condition, that would be a $200+ box on US Ebay.

M70's in good condition bring $350 or more. I haven't seen prices that high on the UK site.

So, personally I think your UK version of Ebay is very affordable, compared to the US (and Germany).

I don't think there are as many boombox collectors in the UK as there are in the US or Germany.

Same thing with cassette tape collectors.....Most of them are in Germany, Poland, Russia.......not England.
