How to Travel by Airplane with a Boombox?

Anyone know the new rules for travelling with a boombox here? Going to take a trip at some point this year and we want to take a boombox along with us..

Do the new rules for flying allow for someone to bring a boombox? Do we need to ship it to our destination? Do we need to bring a small enough boombox to carry on with?

The best bet is to check directly with the airline you are flying with as the rules change almost on a daily basis from airline to airline.

If as carry-on then it must meet regs of such luggage ie weight, dimensions, not including hazardous items (eg batteries) etc.

I'd take the power cable with you in case security want you to show it working, else guess it would get separate X-ray as does all other electronics.

And the most important thing - don't refer to it as a boom box ... airport people get twitchy about anything boom related ;-)

Yes, I have heard that new rule requres you to prove electronics functionality, but batteries are hazardous :hmmm: . Thanks for the reference to 'boom box' I wouldn't have thought of that :lol:

Batteries can be checked if they are new in package OR the ends have tape on them so they can not spark and cause fire.

I have put radios in my luggage before. Of course you risk damage, so pack it well, in a hard shell bag if you got it.

I am heading for Alaska tomorrow to fish for a few days. Thinking about bring a radio, but might say fark it. Still not sure.

I once took a boombox with me on a plane from Germany to Bulgaria and back, hand luggage. It was x-rayed, which was interesting to see :-D It was a TEC super jumbo aka, which can be categorized mid-sized or larger. Took a while but I didn't have any problems. But that was four years ago.

:lol: :lol: I always think about it when I travel and find a nice boombox ( I shouldn’t say that. boom..oops! :lol: tape recorder) buy it and how carry home on an aircraft. I was thinking about buying a hard plastic type of luggage, wrap the box nicely with couple of beach towels and then include it with un accompanied baggage (not a carry on).


I don't see a problem.

After a bad experience with my golf clubs a couple of years ago, I stopped checking anything of value. I just ship everything (other than travel essentials) back and forth between FL and MA. TSA and handlers are Hell-bent on destroying your valuables.

And forget it as a carry-on. Has anyone ever seen how the flight attendants re-organize the overheads? :nonono:

I also find it a little cheaper to pay for shipping than a $75-$100 bag fee.

Man, I miss flying in the 90's - and I fly quite a bit.

Still thinking about it...But it will be either a mini, or a very small radio, possibly this GE

I agree with all that! I have checked a radio in my luggage BUT it was in a huge bag with my Victor 838 packed in the middle of all my clothes and it was safe.

Big: spend the extra checked baggage fee and box it up right.
Small: You can also just carry-on a box. Reinforce the corners inside and out, and use your towels. Bring extra tape to seal it back up after getting through screening. Hell you can even bring packing materials stuffed into your laptop bag and go crazy, or just buy a newspaper or three. If it fits under the seat great but overhead should do as well. I always keep watch over my carry on and make my own adjustments as needed before the attendant can get to it. Board as soon as possible to get it against a divider to shield one side at least.

You can bring a Boombox as carry on luggage but remember, if you fire it up mid flight, it's against regulations in most countries to play anything but reggae. :-)

Well, I can't be without a blaster, so I am taking my Panasonic FM45 Mini with me to Alaska in the morning. It's going in my backpack, wrapped in my sweatshirt and it will ride under the seat in front of me.

I also got 6 D cell's, that I taped both ends with green frog tape to let them know they are packed safely. I also brought a cord incase the need to test the radio.

We'll see how it goes

And don't stress out, I will be home for the west Coast Meet next weekend!

Last year I carried on a Rising SRC2015. From Newark to Ft myers. No problems at all. They didn't even check to see if it was functional. Every one was pretty amazed just seeing an old school box. Got a lot of props in Newark. On the plane I just wrapped it up in a small blanket and put it in the overhead

I've taken a Tosh RT-s93, an M-70 and a GE Blockbuster carry-on on domestic flights (to and from LEDmeter's neck of the woods). All got through no problems at all, with batteries. I would always go carry-on because you can keep an eye on it.

When I took the Tosh I was accosted by the security guard because he loved it and wouldn't shut up about it.

Different airlines have different rules about batteries I think, qantas says you can take them carry on but not check them in.
