I am in the process of restoring a Hitachi TRK 8610AU I picked up on ebay.

The cassette door latch is broken.
Would someone have a photo of the door with the latch so I could make a replacement please?

The lower section below the tape transport buttons can be easily removed for better access when you put it all back together. Without removing it if you try to put the front section back together the tape transport will go crazy.

If you push the top of that section inward and push it down it will release from the catch.
If you try to put the front section back without removing that lower section, the transport buttons will be pushed in and stay misaligned and go crazy.
Since you already opened it up now you can play with it and see how it is attached to the front cover of it.

I made a replacement latch with Epoxy Putty.

New belts and cleaned up the mechanism, tape works now.

Still working on the case, painted the rusty speaker grills. The perspex are scratched, not sure how to fix them.

Nice job so far, especially that door latch.
They do sell clear plastic polish if they're not too deep.
If they are, wet sanding with light grit sandpaper will take them out.
You have to progressively get finer until you can polish the sanding marks out.
Basically the same as what people do with scratched and cloudy plastic headlights.
