Hi Guys,

Well I just dropped off my Hitachi TRK-9140 to finally get the deck serviced, new belts etc + get the distortion problem fixed. My new service tech is in his early 70s and was previously a factory trained Hitachi tech for 30 years!!

He was telling me the local official Hitachi parts supplier went broke 2 years ago. The liquidator dumped his entire audio NOS parts collection - over 1 tonne of parts all went to landfill. :sadno: Some of these parts dated back to the 50s!!

I guess there isn't much money in fixing things these days!

Anways, I know my Hitachi is in safe hands!!

I will let you know how I go when she's all fixed up!

James.... :-)

Jimmy that is some real sad news about the hitachi parts supplier. Good luck with your machine though. It's our duty as collectors to keep these boxes alive as long as possible.

That's the problem! There is a big market for repairs to equipment, but a lot of those old guys who are very skilled technically don't know how to tap into it!

I used to work at a speaker repair shop, and we had so many repairs we couldn't keep up...

Well the mighty Hitachi 9140E is back and better than ever! New belts, tyre, clean and lube and all is well. Nice to try out the manual recording levels etc for the first time!! :-)

Gee, this is a solid feeling deck. The FFWD and RWD are super fast and responsive. The button feel is super smooth and has a quality feel. My repairer said the old belts had turned to goo and the tyre had disintergrated  Yes, this is the unit the Ebay seller said worked perfectly!!

The repairer said the deck and heads looked like they'd had very little wear over the years. Grabbed some new TDK D90s and did a few radio recordings. Worked really well - surprisingly well actually. I've got to source some chrome or metal tapes and give them a try too.

And the distortion at low volume levels problem is fixed too!! According to the repairer, the internal boards, caps etc looked fine. I don't know what he did but it really pumps now!!

Got to get my JVC RC-727 down to him next for a new deck motor and belts. Then my Sanyo 9994K is next for a new volume pot (if that's possible).

He said that he has a never ending line of late model radios, dvd players etc in for repair and most were either not worth repairing or were very difficult to repair due to their poor construction. He has much more success with the older units that were designed to be repaired.

Nice to have an experienced repairer just down the road!!

Wow, my first fully operational boombox!!

James.....

Great news you have your hitachi back and as you say, having a good tech guy local is always good.

Going back to the earlier point, there is no repair service for any electricals anymore. When i was a kid if the telly broke a man came and fixed it, if the washing machine broke a man came and fixed it. I dont know if it was just my family but we used to keep stuff forever, its almost like electricals arnt built to last anymore. But i guess the flip side is that technology is moving so fast things dont need to last more than a year or so before there out of date.
