I just came into possession of a Toshiba RT-S90 with a tape deck door that won't open. Seems to be a common problem with these models? I don't think the problem is related to the belts, because the deck appears to be working in play, ff and rev. Anyone have a solution? Thanks...

It is a tricky one. Try and poke a screwdriver in the hole for the head azimuth adjustment but when in push the heads down slightly, you might be able to get the door just slightly. I had the same problem but a bit of gentle persuasion sorted it.

I had the same issue with my S931s and my S90s. I did a lot of thinking about the eject button and the corresponding mechanism. I ended up using a wide flat butter knife to prise the cassette door down at the eject button side as far as I could before I felt the plastics strain, whilst depressing the eject button at the same time. It popped open and I then pressed the play head down to be able to fully open the door. I opened the box and wound the flywheel around until the play mechanism lowered itself down. Then the problem was no longer  now I gots to order some beltage!

Thanks guys. I was able to get the door open using Doc's suggestion of going in through the azimuth adjust opening and pressing the head down. But now the door won't close and there's no action at all from the deck -- no play, rewind or fast forward. I didn't have much time to play with it by then, however, so with some luck I may be able to get it back in action.

You'll have to go inside now to reset the flywheel mechanism and replace belts. Chances are that the mech is just inbetween and not quite set so no actions are possible.
Now you have freed the door so it will open, you are now in a good position to move forward by going inside and fixing her up :-D
