Just putting this out there for the record as this problem took me six years to fix!
The culprit, if the mech is not pushing the record bar on the pcb, lies in a tiny piece of black plastic called 'sensing piece' (no.6 in the service manual's exploded diagram). It plugs into the swinging metal bar on the rear of the mech.
Remove the old grease. Done.
Mine still pivoted ok i thought, but not easily enough - a flimsy torsion spring activates it.
Sorry for no pics. It was an 'accidental ' repair. I had no idea it would solve the issue. Hallelujah.
