GF-9696 Tape plays radio?

I just got a BIN 9696 on ebay and this is what the description says...

SOME THING IS GONE ARRAY WITH THIS MACHINE, AS THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET THE RADIO TO WORK IS BY PRESSING THE PLAY BUTTON ON THE TAPE DECK AND THEN THE RADIO COME ON BUT AFTER AWHILE THE STOP BUTTON CUTS IN.

Any ideas?

switches need cleaning, I'd be looking at the radio/tape switch, and...well all of them probably could do with a cleaning.

I would guess the seller didn't know about the power switch, it's built into the mic/source fader.

The deck can probably work while in "standby/sleep" mode thus passing sound while the deck is engaged.

nice BIN price by the way just hope he doesn't sting you to much on the freight, if it's high get him to try smart send (good rates and quick turnaround)

This is called sleep mode..Power switch probably needs deoxit. The sleep mode works so you can listen to Radio when falling asleep and when tape ends it goes into auto stop, therefore radio shutting down

Took me almost 30 minutes to get mine working properly

Got this same odd situation going on one with a JVC 838 I picked up for a good price. Radio works when tape is being played. Lot of the switches are touchy and need to be sprayed out, and I'd imagine the power one is the same or somehow just broken.

Thanks guys. Problem fixed. Simple spray of deoxit on the power switch did the trick.
Cleaned her up tonight...
