Even tho a stock 777Z does not compare to an M90 for sound, power, features & tuning capabilities, it does have an excellent double cassette mechanism & is the only double cassette I know of that has a 'toggle' feature that can play both cassettes simultaneously 'or' in sequence, automatically. That is not the feature I am talking about. The feature I am asserting as superior in design to the M90 is a common feature for most 80's blasters.

Can anyone guess what that might be?

Does anyone even care? |-) |-) :sadno: :sadno:

Tuner light :hmmm:

As for the double deck feature of playing the cassettes simultaneously there are many others that do it. A couple I can name off top of my head is the Maggy D8300 and discolite both have this feature.

I know most double decks can play simultaneously but can they be set to play back & forth, in sequence. When set, you can press Play on 1 cassette & it starts playing. Press play on the 2nd cassette & it will wait until the 1st cassette automatically stops before it starts playing. I think it was called 'sequential playback'. Is there another blaster with a double deck that has this feature too?

Still play cassettes when switched off?
No, that is not the feature I'm thinking of but yes you are right. That is another feature that is different than the M90 & can act as a timer for the radio, if desired. It is a more simple thing I am referring to.

I'm none the wiser yet, but I have to know and have had a most enjoyable half hour searching in pursuit of the answer. Inevitably, I managed to get sidetracked somehow and discovered stuff about Thorn boxes from the late '70s/early '80s that are actually rebadged JVCs which - needless to say - I now have to go out and find on eBay!

Could the answer be that the Sharp has fully mechanical transports - with solid steel plates and brass standoffs - which don't depend on fickle thermistors to maintain their ability to load and play tape? :w00t:

Hmm, thought not. :-/

My little Panny RX-CW43 and Panny DT-707 both have continuous playback. The decks on the 707 are among the best in my collection, as both decks also have auto-reverse.

Now the question is whether those boxes have separate motors for each deck. I hate when they share motors -- lots of cheap boxes do that.

I know for a fact the discolite and Maggy I'm speaking of are separate

I love the echo feature on the 777z no other unit has this feature. Plug a mic and see. Also the controls on a 777z are far more superior than jvc units period. The m90 is a sound machine for sure thou, but then again so is the 777z.

Man i love both units.

The Technics SAC05L has echo via its left mixing socket, it makes a great bass amp. Maybe that's how it eats so many AF driver chips.

The GF-999 and GF-1000 have echo, as does the i931; I'm sure there are many other boxes that have this feature too. The echo on the 999 and 1000 can be applied to the radio or an external mic. The echo on the i931 can only be applied to an external mic.

Happy Boom Year!

Ummm the 777 has 6 speakers where JVC's are only 4 ;-). There are actually many differences and we could be here all year.... Oh wait we are in the new year

Ok, I'll tell you now that the STOP mechanism is what I'm talking about here. If you pull the plug on the 777 while a tape is playing, you can still hit the stop button to disengage the carriage & eject the cassette without damage to the deck. If you press the play button on the 777Z decks, & no power is available, the heads don't engage, like a purely mechanical deck. Check it out for yourselves but the 777Z is not purely mechanical like the M70 & it is not purely solenoid driven either.

It is the best of both worlds & for that reason I believe it to be far superior than the mighty M90 although many excellent differences were touched upon while guessing as to my reasoning.

Well that's because M90 has electronic keypad where 777 is mechanical keypad even though both are auto driven by deck motors ;-)

Right! My point being that you can disengage the play heads by hitting stop, regardless of power state. To me that is far better than having a cassette trapped in the bay & having to back the flywheel off manually from inside the cabinet.
