Picked up this 1981 Sharp GF-5656 Boombox Ghettoblaster at a garage sale for $10.00. Brought it home, cleaned it up and tested it. The cassette player works, but needs new belts as usual.
Radio sounds real crisp !
Uses 5" woofers and horn type tweeters.
Cabinet has a few marks and spots but nothing major. Battery compartment is nice and clean !
Made in Japan

Looks perfect to paint in some crazy colour as now it looks super-plain. I'd go for very green or maybe purple :p ?

Peace

 Ah, but would you paint it before or after drilling it for the LED cabinet lights and the essential RCAs for your Android or iphone lead. ;-)
Look at that chassis plate, it's presumably only the 134th one of its type off the line and it's the only one I've ever seen with waffle grilles, later ones seem to have the round mesh sort. I'm a sucker for a waffle grille myself, they're like a loose fitting, long frock that lets a bloke imagine the shape of the girl's lady garden, where the open mesh grille is more like the transparent jeggings that put the hoof right out there and so take the element of mystery away.

The Sharp is a nice box too.

Well its hard to go wrong for $10! To be fair it is fairly plain but i get what John is saying about less is more lol. It's minty and as you say may be one of the first so that makes it interesting. Congrats on a bargain pick up :-)
