Fixing Nakamichi 500 Deck....

E clips flying away!

It has happened to me so many times and I was lucky every time to find them.

last night I was servicing my Nakamichi 500 cassette deck. I had no service manual but was able to open it all up and work on it. Found the tape transport problem. Fixed all the transport issues.

Frozen idler wheel axle with dried up grease was the issue for play, rew and FF not engaging properly.

After taking out and cleaning all old dried up grease on the frozen axle, cleaned and lubed it, slided it on the axle, and when I gently put the 4mm E-clip on the slot and reached for the pliers....it flew away OMG I looked all over and he was gone with the wind.

I was happy I fixed the problem. Now I need to get an e clip assortment to find the right one.

I am planning to try Autozone. Let me where I can walk in and buy those?

eBay seems to have plenty of them. I'd just do a search for your size and material type (plastic/metal) and see what happens. You may want to verify that what you need is not a circlip.

The bigger the ACE, the better the selection they carry. I usually end up with stuf I don't even need when I shop for hardware.

Exactly. I never get the thing I wanted to buy in ACE, but always come back with many things which I didn't want!
Wonderful place to get lost.

I stopped by Autozone and got assorted variety e clips for $4.30. It had several ones of the same size that fits.

I was so happy!

I am no more crawling on my knees looking for it on the floor with a magnet and flash light.

I think we need a work bench with a cover like the watch repaires got not to lose small stuff working on decks.

This Nakamichi 500 deck is so quiet and sounds excellent!

One of the most expensive decks back in those days. Nakamichi Dragon was the most expensive deck.

If anyone find a Nakamichi 500 just buy it. It is one of the most dependable decks with highest performance. The price was $480 in 1978. One of the most expensive decks back then.
