So I've been tip-toeing around the house all morning, Mrs Terry is hungover after Friday night drinks, so this afternoon I've done a few chores and decided to hit my closest thrift.

So I walk in and see an unmarked Maranzt EQ-10 Equalizer, nice clean unit, but at 25 bucks it ain't coming home with me. Then I spot a couple of pieces of Technics gear, silver faced. A Technics Tuner ST-Z1 and Technics Amplifier SU-Z2, well used but not completely ruined by the thrift shop experience, 25 bucks on the tuner and 60 on the amp, classic styling, big meters, not the best gear in the world, but they would make a nice addition to my collection once cleaned up. Note that this is the best I've seen here for months.

Well I was concerned about the stupid price, so I took them up to the counter, and asked if they would do a deal on both pieces, to my mind if I could get them for 60, rather than 85, that would be a win.

Guy: "Sorry I can't do a deal on these"

Me: "Oh that's a pity, I really wanted them, but it's a bit more than I want to pay, can I plug them in and see if they at least light up?"

Guy, now joined by 2 colleagues, "You have a week to return them if they don't work"

Me: "I just wanna see if they light up, not too much trouble is it?"

Other Guy: (taking over the conversation, while reaching for the power extension) Sure we can do that. He plugs them in for me, Left meter light is out on the Amp, Dial light out on the Tuner.

I mention the lights were out. And offer 60 the pair.

Guy: "Oh we cant sell them, they're not electrically safe."

Me: ????? It's only the front lights?

Other Guy, It's not working correctly, we can't sell it, and it cost too much to repair, we'll have to destroy it.

Me: I'll give you 70.

Guy: No we can't sell it, sorry, we have to throw them away.

Me: ???????

Other guy: We have to destroy it.

Me: You do that then, I won't be back; ever.

I'm still dumbfounded.

Does anyone else have tales of thrift stupidity?

Lucky that right arm of yours is out of action!!

What a pair of clowns - that's our risk averse modern society for you. Stupid, over protective rules to protect the exceedingly dim.

On the other hand, they were probably not able to discount the items and thought it best to get rid of you with a made up story of 'safety issues'.

Either way, I wouldn't hire either of them as 'salesmen'.

It wasn't cashies was it?!

James.... :-)

Here in Europe we have a rule = if they }are not electrically safe" they must cut the power cord and you can have them. Thats supose you will go to pro help after and all will be cool  . But thats in recycle centers. Nobody bothers to do that in trift stores.
Looks like those 2 idiots sellers were playing "cool" in their own eyes  . Anyway that is the sign that you dont need those two. Think it that way - you save some moaning from Mrs Terry  So tell her how good you control yourself not buying all electronic crap you see and earn some extra points for future deals :-D .

People take health and safety rules way too far...quite often the rules aren't actually as strict as people think, they're just paranoid and end up doing stupid things...madness :(

Terry, Next time just offer a price in you mind, if you get it, just grab it fast and walk away. They do have a return policy, so why bother to test it at the shop.
We cannot argue with idiots.
It's not healthy for our heart. :-D

Just play dumb!

Hint for next time

You: If you can't sell it give it to me and I will dispose of it for you

Guy: No we can't, sorry, we have to throw them away.

You: I will give you a donation & dispose of the items for you ;-)

Other guy: Ok

way back when i first started our hobby i was told of a massive panasonic mono set at my local british heart foundation, before i started volunteering there.the snag was the lead was snagged so it wasnt available.i prpmptly told them to disconnect the lead as it has nothing to do with the set.i was told it made no difference as it was being scrapped.i was pissed.to say the least :grim:

when i went in goodwill & i wanted to buy this 80's vcr it was $10 but when i tried it out it did not work
so i asked the cashier if they would go down on the price but they said you have to talk to a manager
so i said ok.
so a few min later he comes out & i tell him whats wrong with it.& offer him $5 for it & he said no i have orders from downtown that we can not lower prices on electroincs.
he said you have to pay the full price or we will have to throw it away. he said let the cashier know what you want to do with it. so i just took it back over to the electroincs shelf. & was hoping that they would lower the price. in a few weeks

so i went back a few weeks later & it was still there at the same price so i thought i guess i'll go ahead & buy it maybe i can fix it.
so i got it home & all it needed was new belts & a good cleaning

but what i dont get is that they would just want to throw it out or so they say
instead of making $5 bucks on it i mean they got it for free
& you cant even return items there anymore they got rid of that poilcy which i think is stupid because you cant always test things fully always like if you find a receiver & there might not be any speakers there to test. so you really are taking a chance sometimes

Oh... well you're in luck! *hands business card* I happen to be in the electronics disposal business. I can take these off your hand and i won't even charge my usual fee...
