So I've been tip-toeing around the house all morning, Mrs Terry is hungover after Friday night drinks, so this afternoon I've done a few chores and decided to hit my closest thrift.
So I walk in and see an unmarked Maranzt EQ-10 Equalizer, nice clean unit, but at 25 bucks it ain't coming home with me. Then I spot a couple of pieces of Technics gear, silver faced. A Technics Tuner ST-Z1 and Technics Amplifier SU-Z2, well used but not completely ruined by the thrift shop experience, 25 bucks on the tuner and 60 on the amp, classic styling, big meters, not the best gear in the world, but they would make a nice addition to my collection once cleaned up. Note that this is the best I've seen here for months.
Well I was concerned about the stupid price, so I took them up to the counter, and asked if they would do a deal on both pieces, to my mind if I could get them for 60, rather than 85, that would be a win.
Guy: "Sorry I can't do a deal on these"
Me: "Oh that's a pity, I really wanted them, but it's a bit more than I want to pay, can I plug them in and see if they at least light up?"
Guy, now joined by 2 colleagues, "You have a week to return them if they don't work"
Me: "I just wanna see if they light up, not too much trouble is it?"
Other Guy: (taking over the conversation, while reaching for the power extension) Sure we can do that. He plugs them in for me, Left meter light is out on the Amp, Dial light out on the Tuner.
I mention the lights were out. And offer 60 the pair.
Guy: "Oh we cant sell them, they're not electrically safe."
Me: ????? It's only the front lights?
Other Guy, It's not working correctly, we can't sell it, and it cost too much to repair, we'll have to destroy it.
Me: I'll give you 70.
Guy: No we can't sell it, sorry, we have to throw them away.
Me: ???????
Other guy: We have to destroy it.
Me: You do that then, I won't be back; ever.
I'm still dumbfounded.
Does anyone else have tales of thrift stupidity?
