EQ/receiver hookup help!

So i hooked up my kenwood GE-7030 EQ to my kenwood kr-9600. I removed the metal preamp plugs. Hooked the ADAPTOR OUT to the POWER IN and the ADAPTOR IN to the PRE OUT. Im just getting a faint sound. My old 9600 doesnt have the tape monitor option obviously, so what am i doing wrong!? When put the metal loop plugs back in (as seen in th pic) it returns to full sound. Using my auxillary input on the receiver with my phone. Heres a link to the EQ manual.

Connect the equalizer as if it were a tape deck & activate it by using tape monitor-in. To retain the ability to use that tape monitor for tape functions, connect deck to equalizer. The jumpered pre-outs and amp-in is to split up the receivers amp & pre-amp sections. Removing the jumper basically divorces the amp from preamp & you won't hear anything unless you have those jacks connected to an external preamp. DO NOT connect line inputs to amp input jack. That will be like listening to an iPod in with amp at 100% volume!!!!!!!!

Ok, your post is a little confusing so I'm not sure what you are doing. You say that the 9600 does not have tape monitor function but it does. Then you say you used your phone on aux input. How about use your phone to the tape (play jack) mode & see if you get sound.

When i have tape monitor selector on SOURCE, there is sound (without eq) from my AUX input. When i flip it to tape monitor A, all goes silent. If the eq was faulty, i would stil expect unequalized sound to play from AUX input when switched to tape monitor A, as the loop is still being completed.
Question. So as the kr is set up...should i be able to hear two sources (AUX and tape A) when the AUX input is selected and Tape monitor A is selected...if i had a cassette player hooked up to it?
Question 2. Does it have anything to do with the fact that im running a 3.5mm jack from my phone to RCA into the AUX input, and not an actual RCA source out to RCA in?

yes it does have tape monitor function. I was thinking of the tape2 function button on 90's receivers that was set up specifically for EQs. My bad

Source refers to input source (tuner, phono, aux) other than tape. The tape monitor means input source is the tape play jacks. The tape record jacks are like line outs from 9600 'source' unless you are dubbing mode. In that case, the 'source' would be whatever mode you've selected such as A-B or B-A. No, the 3.5mm adapter shouldn't matter. To see if your monitor switch is working properly, connect your phone to the respective play jacks on either tape A or B and then see if you get sound in monitor mode. You may also need to use the record jacks into (a BOOMBOX line-in maybe?) and see if those jacks are working. Also maybe see if monitor B is working if A is not.

OK. So I tried everything you suggested using my phone and everything seemed to work without using the EQ at all...except one thing.
When I plug my phone into the PLAY inputs on Tape A on the KR and run RCAs from the Rec out of tape A to my boombox....I get nothing from my boombox...but I get sound from the receiver.
But when I plug my phone into AUX and run RCAs from rec out to boombox while tape monitor A is selected...I get sound from my boombox.
Sooo the rec out on the receiver will send a signal from the AUX in but not from the tape play in.

Everything sounds perfect to me. As I said, record (out) is from 9600 (source: tuner, phono, aux) unless in dubbing mode. It would be silly for record out to choose itself (tape playback) as source during recording function.

I suspect the equalizer is bad or setting not correct. Try input signal from aux source (your phone?) into the equalizer, then equalizer out into aux-in on receiver. If no or very low output then I would be returning that equalizer if you just bought it.

When I plug my phone directly into the amp in on the EQ, and run the amp out directly to the AUX in on the kr...I get nothing. Then when I run the amp out to the tape play on the KR I get very quiet music at knob turned to almost full volume.

So I'm guessing my EQ is FD up....

BUT...shouldnt the tape A rec out on my kr send a signal to my boombox when my phone is plugged into the tape A play in on the kr? This is whats confusing me.

I bought the EQ in '96 then gave it to my dad a few years later. I just stole it back today. He hasnt had it hooked up in years. I guess its done. Time for a new one.

Yup. I had it off. Tried it both ways actually.
You saying to plug my source directly into the eq then out to the receiver and getting little to no sound was the kicker. I tried that and was posting about it as you were suggesting it. That confirms a bad IQ for me.
