Put a pair of real tweeters in there and it could be one of the best sounding cheaper boxes.

Exceptionally nice ones have been selling for good $$'s.

:hmmm: I have one and I really like the sound, Is not a real loud box but it does have a warm bass sound to it when I listen to classic R&B.

Whoa! :-O The RX-5150 is nice, but it's nowhere near $230 nice. Congrats to the seller though.

Well it's weird, because I thought mine didn't produce much bass either. Certainly not as much as my GF8989 or my TPR950.

It's very high quality though, with awesome Ambiance effects, nice metal trim, great-feeling knobs, smooth tape deck, and nice LED meter.

Can't say for sure what a 5150 is worth, but $200 isn't out of the question for a minty one. Given the recent attention being given to boomboxes lately by pop culture influences like Lyle Owerko's book (and the CBS Sunday Morning feature about it), t-shirts at clothiers like Urban Outfitters, commercials for Progressive Insurance and others, and - of course - this website, we probably shouldn't be surprised that the demand and prices for boomers are growing. What was once a niche-hobby is quickly turning into a fad with mass appeal. After all, eighties teens are now at an age where they can afford to recapture this part of their youth.

For those of us who got into this hobby a few years ago, all of this should come as good news, because our collections are turning into "investments." For those just getting started, the higher prices may get in the way of accumulating a quick, high-end collection. But it should also ensure that good boxes will continue to be available... especially from older collectors ready to "cash in."

I have noticed prices on ebay have been steadily climbing lately, especially on the more popular boomboxes. I am glad I purchased most of my collection during the recession. I am sitting on a goldmine of M70's right now!!

Mine has some nice highs probably due to the Ambience  I think tax time this year has a lot to do with the escalated prices :hmmm: ;-)

i can understand the prices on the big boys....but i dont understand the prices ive seen the pannys goin for. seems like its more of a growing interest in boxes as opposed to the tax time thing. sure taxes has something to do with it though. bet you wont see a minty m90 go for under 900 anytime soon. wish i would have gotten into these things a year ago...id have all my GFs by now.

I've seen 5150's go for over $200 many times. Most of the time, they are very nice units. You can get cheaper ones if you want a beater, or one needing work but if you want a nice one, they aren't as easy to come by.... then why not pay a bit more? Anyhow, simply bidding $5000 isn't going to result in a $5000 sale. You need to have at least 2 guys willing to foot the big bill for it to become a reality. Supply and demand, the free market system at work.

A mint fully working M90 just sold for only $600 something last week......
That one was damaged during shipping and repaired. Casing was cracked. Lot of little dings and scratches on the front....but it was still pretty nice. Thought it was gonna hit 700

True dat... I got into it late 2009, and STILL working on my first GF... :annoyed:

Agree with the ore comments though, you wouldn't think the smaller boxes would go high, but I also have noticed that they tend to be boxes with lots of bells and whistles, meters, LEDs, etc.

Yes that was a member here James. I thought even with the repaired cracks and minor scratches it would hit $900 - $1000 :-( James always has great boomers up for sale :-)

It was a bit of a disappointing auction, but you can't always get what you want :-/ ! It was a great deal for the buyer though!! He lives in Guam!
I have bought non working M90s for more money than mine sold for , I probably exaggerated its condition towards the negative trying to make sure no one was misled, and it backfired and scared folks off of a great boombox...I didnt want to post a for sale post here of my boomboxes again although I am obviously selling quite a few these days
