Since I announced I found two excellent Panasonic Cobra's just 2 weeks apart in December I've had a standing request from Ira for a comparison. The Two models I'm comparing are the RX-DT75 and the RX-DT707.
RX-DT75
RX-DT707 - Pic taken from web but mine is identical
Size
Physically the 707 is wider and more bulbuous than the 75 but only about .2 pounds heavier. I would guess Panasonic intended to give the 707 more intereior volume for the speakers.
Advantage 707
Looks
This is of course subjective but I feel the 707 is extremely plain and boring with no style. The 75 has some sweeping lines and angles that does give it a bit of style even with it's boring dark grey color.
Advantage 75
Power
Both the 75 and 707 draw 57 watts and run Bi-Amps. I expect that they run the exact same amps.
No advantage to either
Speakers
The 75 runs a 3-way speaker speaker system: 8 cm Woofer, 8 cm Mid, 1.5 cm Tweeter (8 cm = 3.15 inches)
The 707 runs a 2-way speaker system: 10 cm Woofer, 8 cm Tweeter (10 cm = 3.94 inches)
Advantage 707 lows, Advantage 75 highs
Features
The 75 and 707 share many of the same features however the 707 adds Surround sound and Auxilary Input via RCA jacks. The features on the 707 are easier to access both with the top up and down. The 707 places access to more features directly under a button where the 75 is a little more menu driven.
Advantage 707
Sound
Here's the one everybody wants to know.
I used both New Age music and the Gorillaz on CD to compare different qualities and a few things became apparent very quickly. On New Age music with moderate lows but more high frequency detail the 75 with it's true tweeter was just slightly crisper however the 707 performed very well. Mids on both boxes are very fluid and natural, I never felt I was missing anything with either box. Bass was another story and more of a surprise, the 75 could easily be pushed beyond it's limits with Gorillaz which is bass heavy music but the 707 went deeper and markedly louder before bass breakup began. The 707 also offered a very effective surround that didn't give me the hollow ear feeling like I've had with so many other surround boxes, the sound expanded and deepened wonderfully.
Advantage 707
Volume
Neither box is going to destroy your loudest boxes but both can play cleanly on the loud side, the 707 will go louder while playing clean probably due to it's larger woofer. I would place the output level just a little below an M90.
Advantage 707
Overall they are both excellent boxes with the cool and unique Cobra top however the 707 adds a few very useable features and handles the full range of sound just a little better than the 75.
Winner of the Comparison is the 707
Although the 707 came out on top neither box should be overlooked for any price under $100, even $200 for what they have and can do is not bad.
