I usually just hunt for free or super cheap cassettes (older people music opera/classical/religious) and buy bulk lots. You know, garage sales etc.

Then, rifle through and pull out anything that is still listenable or recorded on high-bias tapes and keep.

Then rifle through again and pull out cassettes with perfect cases and trade out the cases with the ones in my collection that are battered.

Then give the battered cases and crappy music to the goodwill.

Rinse, spin, repeat
