Finally got around to fooling with GE 3-5286A. Got the static out of the pots but the switches were a no go. Sprayed the crap out of them, no avail. Decided to desolder one and see whats up. As I suspected, baked on crud. Deoxit wouldn't touch it without scrubbing action. Used a wire brush and scotch pad, got them pretty good and clean. Dunno if you can see from the pics, the crud was burnished along the contact path causing the issues. Yes, a pain in the ass to desolder and disassemble them but they had to be physically cleaned. Once desoldered, just bend the retaining tabs and carefully remove the mechanism. Be darn sure you don't lose the little sliding contacts. A good spraying usually works but this unit was evidently in a dirty and smokey environment.
