Just managed to pry this bad boy from my dad. He picked it up at a second hand store for $50 (Canadian). He took $200 after offering for a couple months. Take decks don’t work and the aux/phono is loose but still plays good if sitting right. Other than that no scratching and pretty decent cosmetics except for a small piece of one of the back feet is broken.
I’m a little scared to open up such an iconic box. I’ve done belt changes and small repairs on other boxes but am definitely intimidated by this one.
Anybody know of any good repair shops in the Toronto area? Thanks.1FB657CC-1914-4BBD-910D-D83EDF75A8BE.jpeg

Go it yourself. I’m far from a tech pro and completely stripped mine to give it a bath. One of the easier boxes I’ve pulled apart

Congratulations. It looks very clean for sure. Only thing I noticed was the tape run indicator panel.

That will require pulling the chassis to access and glue it back into position and while the chassis is out, belts would be the next step.

I had heard it was a hard box to work on which scared me a little.

Watch this video for a basic run down.

The most difficult part is labeling the connections and making sure everything goes back exactly the way it was. If your are very meticulous and organized it won't be too bad. If you are not...it will be your worst nightmare.

$200 Canadian is just over $150 USD which is a screaming deal for the mighty 7980--congrats!
I've taken several of mine in the photo to Siber at the store Classic Vintage Audio on Queen Street West in Toronto. Siber has bought, sold, traded & repaired more 7980's than anyone else in this province over the past 20 years.20190126_164156.jpg
