Scored this Sony CF-490S off eBay the other week so thought I'd give her a clean and post a few pics. Big shout out to local member James for pointing this one out.....a couple of poor quality photos and not much write up had me overlooking this one......but believe me, these units should never be overlooked!

Weighing in at a solid 6.1kg this mono has a real quality build you can feel.

Sony really did a job with this one......a matter of 6 backing screws and one wire and the whole chassis popped out smoothly.....the circuit board is held by 2 clips on the right hand side and is hinged to allow easy access to the decks.......it was very clean inside thanks to an insect screen over the rear vents.....probably the easiest, cleanest, and most accessible unit I've worked on.

They've certainly made an individual looker too.....from the chrome studs surrounding the sunken grill covering the main driver, the massive dust cap, full frontal coverage with the speaker grill, and some sort of "cage" in front of the driver. In my opinion it just looks fantastic coupled with the simple sliders and aluminium face.

Dan.

And most importantly this thing is LOUD with masses of bass.....I've no idea why Sony thought a 200W driver was necessary but damn it sounds fine!

Anyways I hope you enjoy the pics. I now need to find a JVC 550 to see how it stacks up to this weapon of a mono!!

Interesting box, don't think ive seen one before or ive just ignored it. After reading your write up I too would be interested at how it stacks up against the JVC.
Added to want list :-)

Now that's a mono!!!! I agree they are a really nice, bassy unit. The build quality is typical high grade late 70s but the bassy sound is much more modern and up to date sounding to my ears!

That brushed metal top plate came up really nice.

For those unfamiliar with this model, if you look closely, you will notice the grill is the inter woven style and is super resistant to damage. The grill covers the entire front panel except for the tuner dial and tape door!

Certainly a rare box - much rarer than a 550!

I knew you'd love this one Dan.

Congrats,

James.... :-)

Beautiful, especially the top panel with the elegant slider controls.
It is very rare to see monos with Bass/Treble controls and this one has Loudness too
Sony is very much overlooked.

I've never heard of or ever seen this model, but wow I like it. Great job on the clean up too, came out great, nice score on that one. Can't go wrong with a Sony!

One of the best clean up on a mono box ever.

I have never seen this model, looks great with the analog VU meter and classy grill.

Certainly worth the effort :-D
