Last week, I was finally reunited with this awesome Technics RS-B78R cassette deck from 1983. I had it for about a month last year before I accidentally fried the motor when trying to adjust the speed potentiometer. :/ I wasn't too torn up about it, though, since I didn't really pay much for it and periodically had some speed issues anyway. I ended up replacing it with a Technics RS-B28R, and, ironically, two months before that, I had fried the motor of my first B28R. I've learned my lesson, though. I still have the B28R, of course, and I'm currently debating on selling or keeping it.

Back to the topic of this tape deck, it sounds absolutely awesome through my Marantz 2265B receiver. Speed is on target with no issues. It was manufactured in 1983, and while it may not be a "classic" like a Marantz 5220, it suits me very well.

Get a Nakamichi deck! You will be pleasantly surprised by the quality of it. :jawdrop:
I've heard that! Did Nakamichi ever make any decks in silver, though? Because I'm anal about such things, haha.

I asked this question on other forums, but didn't get an answer, so I figure I'll ask you guys. So I installed a new belt in this auto-reverse Technics RS-B78R cassette deck, and now it will only 'Play' while in "Reverse" mode, but not "Forward". It still fast forwards and rewinds in Forward, but not Play or Record. Now I KNOW this is a simple problem, but this is my first time replacing a belt in a component deck, so I can't quite wrap my finger around what the problem is. Do any of you know what this means?

Will it at least switch to side or does it switch right back? Is this the type of head that spins for the direction of tape. And did you clean the pinch rollers good?

You might have put belt on wrong :hmmm: I've seen that happen before

...Yup. I was thinking that. Auto-Reverse decks usually have one flywheel inside the belt and one idles on the outside so that the capstans spin in opposite directions.

OK, here's the relevant page from the manual for your deck. Click to open it in a readable size then pay particular attention to the text box that explains how to rest one belt while you fit the other as well as the runs they follow. It all looks pretty straightforward for an auto reverse deck but if the belts are correct and it still won't reverse, check whether the head is turning as it should. Let me know if you want a copy of the manual in its entirety, it's parked at my dropbox and I can just as easily send a copy by email.

Beosystem, you are THE MAN!! I followed that instruction and now all is good again! Turns out I did have the belt on wrong. I never would have thought the belt went on in the weird way it does. Anyway, THANK YOU!

:-) I'm glad to have been of some use here, but all credit due to baddboybill and superlew, these guys already mentioned the routing of the belt and the diagram simply served to back up what they were already thinking. ;-)

I do like a happy ending!

Well, what had happened is I wrapped the belt around both of those wheels instead of just the one. I thought that was how I took it off but apparently I just didn't remember correctly/pay enough attention.

Anyway, yes, I will give credit to all of you! Thanks for helping me! I know this is a forum devoted primarily to boomboxes, but I do what I gotta do sometimes.
