Sorry for the vague title I'm no expert on these but I picked up an Aiwa 950k, everything works fine but when I go to play a cassette the wheels? dont spin, is this generally a belt issue?

Yes and if the belts are original, they're usually the consistency of tar and no, I'm not joking.
One 950 or 955 that I refurbished, the reel belt melted into the take up reel spring which was a pita.
It's fairly tough stuff to clean up.
I forget but I believe acetone cleans it best but you have to be careful what you use it on as it can melt certain plastics.
Something safer like mineral spirits might clean it but it takes more effort.

Plus one for the tatty belts being the cause .
I picked one up a year or so ago and the belts worked initially but failed after a few weeks in use -luckily they hadn`t gummed up to much of the workings.
A local electronics and hifi repairer fixed mine with a service and belt replacement for about £65 -money well spent as the inner components are tightly packed and tricky to work on.
Really great sounding, well built pieces though and the higher spec Aiwas of that period often had good tuners as well as reliable, quality decks.

Thanks for the replies, That would explain the black stuff that I couldn't get off my fingers when I was giving it a clean, it's the only issue with it as everything works perfectly I'll try and find someone local and see what they can do

That's the stuff Buddy.
I've refurbished two 950s and two 955s and all four had the goo in them to some extent.
These are high quality boxes, probably my favorite out of all that I own.
They're not the easiest to work on but definitely worth the effort.
Here's a pic of one of my 955s while I had it apart.

Ammonia type glass cleaner or isopropyl alcohol works great to clean up the gooey belts.
And its safer than acetone.
