Short and sweet....which of these sounds better/louder? Inside / Outside?

The 990 looks more the part....but the 950 is better on battery life??

Ideally i'm looking for responses from people who have both of these....fully recapped!

I think for the money the TPR950/955 is a better all around box.
I've has both the TRP990 and TPR955.
"IMHO" it does sound better than the 990 outside and is just as loud.
The 990 is more of a indoors easy listening unit.

I agree with Skippy. I have both, too (but no recapped). The 990 sounds great but the 950 somehow sounds better, with slightly more richness and depth. It really is an amazing machine, one of my all time favorites. And Skippy's right about the looks, too. The 990 is sleek and refined, meant more for indoors, but the 950 is rugged and looks great anywhere. Plus it's easier to carry.

As for batteries, the 950 takes only six and the 990 takes eight.

If they were all recapped, you might get a better comparo. All I can tell you is I listened to my TPR-990 and then I listened to another TPR-990 owned by another member. Mine sounds noticeably better. The point is that each example can vary which is what you would expect from 30+ year old electronics as each example wears at a different rate. The 950/955 are much lighter though so for carrying around, they will be better for that. The 990 is a tank. You'd think the whole thing was made of metal. I really like the deck on the 990 a whole lot more than the other two however. When fully, working is what I mean..... it's a really smooth logic deck.

Cheers Norm. I've heard that the 990 is quite the animal to work on too!

Oh, it is. But when it's right and hopefully new belts and a serviced deck goes another 20 years, it's a sweeeet deck. It also has a BTL configured amp like the 950/955 but with 3 more volts of power, you would expect a bit more oomph than the other 2.

Perhaps someday, if I have nothing else to do, I'll recap mine and see what kind of difference it makes. On a few of my boomboxes, recapping made a huge difference in sound.

I agree, it is massive work to get that deck working again but when it works you listening to one of the IMO. if you have to choose between the two I would definetly prefer the 990

I have a 950.......but I'd rather have a 990 because I think it looks better :-P

The 950 has that weird greenish-colored top trim.......They should have made it charcoal gray.

Also the knobs and switches are rather cheap.

I've never heard a 990, so I can't compare it. All I know is that the 950 has amazing reception & sound quality.

 The top trim on my 950 isn't greenish, it IS charcoal gray. I quite like the color. But if you don't like the top trim, there's always the 955, which is silver on top with chrome-finish knobs. It looks nicer than the 950, IMHO, and has the digital tape program selection function too.
