3D Printing at your local Library

Recently I heard of public libraries offering FREE 3D printing, so I went online, searched that very subject and sure enough, my local library offers FREE 3D printing as well as FREE laser inscribing and plotter cutting.

The only catch is, YOU have to do the cad cam programming yourself. They have all the computers and equipment and all they ask is for a small donation for materials, which is optional.
What they are NOT, is a printing company where you call in an order and come pick it up finished.

Last Wednesday I went to my local library to have a look, met with a pleasant young lady who was running the room housing the equipment and she gave me the run down. I showed her a cassette deck key off a Wheely and she told me, if I could get the program built to run the printer, I could print it there for FREE!

She also told me, they had a 3D scanner, but it was new and they hadn't set it up yet and asked me if I would like to try and figure it out with her.

Basically, it is a tool for people to come and learn how to use this equipment. Personally, I think it's BRILLIANT!

Google this subject and check your local library, that missing volume knob or switch tip might be right around the corner.

I asked this very question, if it's a super long print, you come back the next day and pick it up!

Ummmm  I never said "super hot librarian". She was a nice pleasant young lady (plus, way to young for me, I did the math  )
BUT, she was the person that spearheaded the program at this particular location, so BIG prop's to her!

Just curious.... what kind of materials are available for 3D printing? I mean not in that library but in general.
Thanks in advance.

That's really cool, did you see any samples from their machine? I'm curious if it would be accurate enough for something intricate like a Conion door.

I know there are different types of plastics, but they can now print Metal and Wood too. More here: http://www.shapeways.com/materials/

Yes, they had hundreds of items on the shelf of samples they have printed. Some of them were rough, others were printed in "Higher" resolution and looked very good and detailed!

This is a pretty cool thing, after reading I decided to look up my local libraries.

The only one around me is about 20 miles away over the toll bridge. Not bad... but I was hoping my local one that's 3 mins away would. Then I could actually spend some time messing around with one.

a good lathe with the right accessories and a slick operator can reproduce itself --
that stood alone for the last few centuries -

but now .. i suspect that a 3D printer could create a 3D printer ?

Really, all the work is on the cad design which you can do at home on Tinker cad

And then go to the library to print it
