    RISING 20 20 clean up

Beautiful, love all the chrome at that looks so good. Out of interest, is the Rising a Crown CSC850 clone or vice versa? I just picked up an 850 and there are so many similarities inside and out. Either way, fantastic work

    mystery crown

I'd put my money on a silver Crown 850, too. I have never seen another silver and black one-piece Crown with needle VUs.

    I don't normally brag... but.....

I trade mine for a Crown 850... ...this Sanyo it's extremely heavy for my L5 S1 Ernia... Sounds REAL solid and loud. Cheers.

Crown 980 smokes all other midsize boxes

Well, but then you'd have to separate the C100's and Super Jumbos from the rest of the "large" boxes.

    Late 1980s Boomboxes

...who can help you, though most people here collect late-70s - early/mid 80s boomboxes. I myself have none from after 1986, so I can't really help. For just popular models in the US in the 80s I'd go with Lasonic 931/975, Sharp GF-777, Crown 850, perhaps JVC-M70 and M90. and Conion C-100. Peace

Crown 980 smokes all other midsize boxes

imho i suggest that all boxes with 7 to 8 inch speakers should not be in the ' medium ' category-- they should fight it out with the big boys ............ so the crown 850 , 980 , rising 20/20 etc are biggies

Crown 980 smokes all other midsize boxes

I'be been cranking my CSC-950L today - a bit of soul'n'funk and it just purrs along - that great Crown sound in a smaller package. I also have a CSC-850 that then drops the bass down further and guess I got lucky as my one sounds sweet on lows, mids and highs. I've not heard any other Crowns but...

Crown 980 smokes all other midsize boxes

I've always liked the Crown 850/980 boxes - they've got the look and, somehow, they produce nice bass!? Like all these old boxes, it does depend on the condition of the example you're listening to. I've personally heard 3 Crown 850s - one sounded really sweet, the other two sounded equally...

Crown 980 smokes all other midsize boxes

Just got another one of these. You guys who haven't experienced one in good nick are missing out. Is it the Crown 850 on steroids? Nah not really, more like the 850 on HGH or Botox. It's the living-room version of the 850....warmer, more mature, more luxurious, less "street". Is it...

    JVC 838 cool fact!

There are many boxes where you only have to push Record, you don't have to push Play or Pause.........just Record. Examples: Universum 16000 Crown 850 Panny RX5500

    9696 V M70

The 9191 and 8989 might sound "flat", but the 9696 does not. It has both deep bass and nice highs. At least, my GF508SB does (it's just a Japanese 9696). As for the Crown 850/980, yes, both of those have more bass than an M70 IMHO. Yes the M70 is louder, but I don't care about that.

    9696 V M70

Yep sure is my fave Dimitris :-D though I would still love to get my hands on many other boxes :-) I just love the look of the 9696 and not so much the m70. I think most jvc's look bland and boring even though they perform well. So in a nutshell I would take the 9696

    9696 V M70

Lav's favourite bbox ! :-) D8614. I would choose JVC M-70 for the sound and GF-9696 for its looks. I dont know why but all Sharps imo have a flat sound except ofcourse the flagship model the GF-777 all others seem flat . For the same size box i d also like the sound of Crown 850 and Crown 980.

    My first Toshiba!...Toshiba RT-8860S

...in 15 min. Now it sounds not marvellously better, but much better than I remembered. But I do listen to mostly hip hop, so I am partial to crown 850 etc. And obviously sound is very different to different people, as I for one love my 770A ! just feels fuller than the bombeat 16, while to...

    My first Toshiba!...Toshiba RT-8860S

The 9990 has a bit stronger amps according to the Toshiba advertisements. As far as the 770 goes, I was never all that impressed with that box.....Sure, it has more bass than this, but the detail & accuracy was weak. Plus the tuner felt cheap. No wide setting either.

    My first Toshiba!...Toshiba RT-8860S

Yep you're doing something wrong or yours is not well...this is a great sounding box, top quality. Sounds better than my 770

    My first Toshiba!...Toshiba RT-8860S

...mine doesn't sound anywhere near as good as my other tosh, the 9990. actually I'll put it way down in the bottom with the captain in my collection if anything, which is not bad, but its got nothing on aiwa 770, sharp 9696, crown 850 etc. Am I doing it wrong lol ? But it does look darn good...
