I Learnt A Valuable Lesson Today!

As most of you know, since I got the M9996 & went through the toil of repairing it etc, I haven't been up to much else in the stereo world But then, I started recording more & more cassettes as my home setup is finally complete, the Technics cassette deck & also the Technics direct drive...

    Project Black M70

The color on that 850 is really nice, not too loud, but not too subtle. One sweet looking Crown. You do some great work Mel.

Here is a custom Crown 850 I did for a collector. Cleanest 850 I have ever seen and the color is stunning.

    National RX-C45 v Panasonic RX-DT680 sound comparison

...power consumption under control to allow the practical use of D cells is a much more impressive achievement, in my mind at least! :-) The Crown 850, Sanyo M9990 & M9994 are examples of boomers, IMHO that sound much bassier than they should considering the modest power output offered on...

triple the boom (for my 100th post)

All Crown 850s have black cases. The outside of the front cover is painted silver from the factory. I think your one has a painted front panel to match the black sides and rear panel. Your version with the 'coloured' Crown badge is the later version that had plastic control knobs instead of...

    Another Crown thanks to retrohead:-)

I picked up a Crown 850 for a reasonable price off eBay not so long ago and after fixing it and making it complete I was really pleased with it. So when I was offered a 950 in trade by Andy (retrohead) I was very interested! So I drove the hour or so to Andy's house, had a chat and some fish...

    Which box ?

5250 has Ambience and a bit more bass, but the 5500 has better build quality and is more rare. The 5500 is so tightly packed that it weighs exactly as much as a Crown 850 which is a much bigger box. 5250 bass is warmer, but 5500 speakers are tighter and better for guitar and vocals.

    date of manufacture

Thanks a lot Adam much appreciated, so the 850 is from 81 then? or am I missing something? beautiful box btw

Thanks Adam that would be much appreciated :-)

    date of manufacture

I believe that may correct. I scored a Crown 850 that I have read came out in mid 80s. It has a manufacture date of '81 0n an adhesive on it. I'll double check it tomorrow.

    Crown vs. Lasonic

:-D I've never had the opportunity of listening to a Unicef or Crown (other than My CSC-850). The TRC-931 foam edged woofers have has always aided it with a good bassy sound.

    Lovely Crown CSC-850

Always wanted one of these as I had heard good things, well i picked this one up for a song. It had some issues, almost all of which are now sorted, quite impressed as it has some big woofers and it really does look peachy i think: Here she is naked and soapy (Northerner will be proud) And...
