It's about time to start another build thread, because the pictures are piling up..
I had this idea over a year ago when I got my first Lasonic TRC-931, and am now just making it happen!
I scored 2 separate BIN deals with absolutely NO DESCRIPTION, listed as "parts or not working" but luckily they both were in working condition.. Sure.. I could've made one perfect box out of the two, but where is the fun in that? To have a minty 931 like everyone else..?
I gotta be different, so time to start customizing!!
Here are the working donors for this project.. both powered on, but one plays radio and one plays tapes, but AUX-IN works on both..

With scalpel in hand the incision has begun... :jason:

Getting a little perspective on size and placement of this makeshift unit..

Started the welding process with a weave pattern, but later switched to "push/pull" puddle to get better penetration..
3.JPG

Bottom section welded together and weld seam reinforced with epoxy..
4.JPG

During the fitment of this process I used a square to make sure all the edges/ lines/ and angles were lining up..
Welded the top cap(s) to the woofer bottom and shortened the handle 8"

Moved the new handle mounts to the center of the unit and start welding up all the unused holes..

With most everything smoothed up and white woofers in place this box is taking shape!

Starting to work on the back of the cabinet, making sure fitment is correct..

As you can see the whole box has been sanded with 80 grit to prepare for the fiberglass work, I have ditched the original faceplates and smoothed out the mold seams because this whole unit is going to have a kustom paint job all over it!
I kind of have a vision in my head that I know you can't see the end result, so if you have any questions just ask.. ;-)

All comments (or criticism) is appreciated.. you may see something I don't see or your idea might inspire me as well!
JVCFloyds topic gave me the little push I needed to really get going on this sucker..

Not sure what is next, the back vents.. the handle slots on the rear casing... or lowering the handle height 1"
It's been -20 degrees wind chill here, so just waiting on a warmer day to start hitting it hard again..

Omg!...you're insane!...but I love it! If you finish it to the same high standard that you've started it then this Frankenstein's monster could well actually be awesome :-)

This is weapons grade certifiable ingenuity! I love the concept but, as Fresh Produce aksed, where is (are) the cassette deck(s)?
I'm thinking maybe it's meant to be radio only which would at least keep it light enough to tote around with normal human arms.

It's looking very interesting though, this regardless of which functions are left out.

Pretty frickin cool man. I'm not one for custom jobs, but that thing looks massive. ...and your going to 'dump' or lower the handle? heh, cool mang. Is that handle going to be sufficient, the box looks like its going to be HEAVY.

my humble advise --dont totally trust the handle --specially with a load of D cells

so --make 6 strap holders --2 / bottom .. 2 on each side --
to hold a 2" heavy duty strap -

then get friendly joe to make you a custom job

was wondering if it was possible to mount the slot loaded tape deck? , you could mount it on one side panel and recess the mounting plate or make it flush mounted .

Holy **** bro! Can I send you my two 931s to do the same thing?! This is the coolest mod ever!!!!

So are you powering this with amp chips from both or just from one? Will it run on batteries? Im so intrigued yet so confused on how this is gonna work. I need some specs. This is awesome. I'm cool with no radio or tape...this is an aux monster!

Installed the handle rests on the back casing earlier, and deleted the stock antenna mounts..

After measuring, 3/4" is the most that is allowed to lower height of handle without it hitting the box when folding down.. Because the box is so long and low now, I think the handle is sticking up a lil too high..

THanks for replies dudes, I knew you'd have some good ideas!
After doing some critical measuring, the top slot-loading deck might actually fit! Under the handle on the front above the EQ.. Didn't think a cassette deck was feasible, was just gonna do FM and AUX, but it just might work after all!
