The telefunken has more bass there about the same in volume but the telefunken distorts alot more than the m90 they both have the best treble a box can have here is the catch, if you place an m90 on your lap and listen to it head on, NOTHING beats that sound not even the telefunken. hope this helps.

You just answered your own question johnny me m90 all day long but for example the telefunken will sound way better than any box in your collection, and i sure dont mean that in a bad way.
One thing to note, i say there about the same volume but when you take a telefunken out on batts ithere is something in it that reduces the power because it only runs on 8 d's where as the 90 runs on 10 so outside the m90 is the loudest.

I had both boxes at the same time and IMO
the Funken is the overall winner.
I would much rather listen to My M-1 than any box in my collection so far as sound quality is concerned.
The M-90 has crisper highs and more over all volume but
The Funken sounds fuller, much richer and has better separation.
Bear in mind though you are comparing a three piece to a two piece box.
It is almost unfair to compare them.
Both of mine were in very good shape and I have had both of them fully apart
to attest to their build quality as well.
Both are built very well but the build materials on the Funken are better than the m-90

This is just me but in my mind, a portable stereo should be a 1 piece all-in-one solution and designed as such. After decades of collecting home audio gear, I can say that the worst (exceptions to every rule of course) home receiver/cassette/speaker solution is going to sound better by far than the best portable audio solution. The audio specs and THD's present in a portable stereo is so poor that any home gear advertising such specs would be laughed off the planet. But..... it's a compromise we make for the sake of portability.
3 piece boxes look too much like a home shelf system and the detachable speakers usually make them a little more fragile when handling for my tastes. In my mind, they are more like a cross between my ideal portable and a home shelf system. Detachable speakers? That would be portable stereo blasphemy! To each his own so no hate mails please.

I have had handles come of but never speakers, come to think of it i have even bought one of those funkens without a handle, am i the only one 
i have to say usually 3 peice sound much better than some of the one peicers, but i am a suka for the m90.

1.you were desparate to get a studio
2. you finally found one----after years of hard searching
3. you went to get it --ON A DARK NITE
4. but you could not locate the handle--
5 . and it was much too heavy and clumsy to carry home w/o the handle :'-(
6. the next morning --you went back to get it ---in the daylite
7. and you STILL could not find the handle !!!!
8. and it was a stock /factory tele studio
so - you bought the worlds most rare model

It may be rare but what bloody good is a funken with no handle 
fond memorys ehh sad thing though i gave it away as it had been smashed in the post and had no handle but i still have the batt door, sombody was looking for one but i can't remember who

Absolutely fair to compare!!! Portable stereos since the dawn of portables usually came with at least one detachable speaker. Especialy if it was a stereo unit. So to say a component set is not a "true" design for a portable is not quite on the mark. And please keep in mind I am speaking from a factual historical perspective. Do the research and you'll see...
That being said, by design, a component set has distinct advantages over a single enclosure box. The main thing being the speakers. Depending on the design, you box will operate more efficiently. An M-90's speakers will not be as effiecient or produce as tight a bass as say an Hi-Fi Studio or National/Panasonic RX-C100 because the speakers are in a leaky enclosure with the other components. The aforementioned component units use an acoustic suspension enclosure, which, while requiring lot's more power to offset resisitance within the speaker box (air has nowhere to go and will limit cone movement) will have a tighter bass and a resonance that will permeate a room.
Some are designed with the purposeful intent of making the most of the walls or shelves they sit on such as the Pioneer CK series starting with the CK-5. The enclosures on those speaker housings have a large vertical rectangular opening on the back to push air of a wall intentionally as a rear firing bass reflex speaker would. Pioneer uses a slightly more radical design for their application in this instace though.
Also for component vs. vertical single eclosure? A component will win (especially if multi piece) because it allows for better and more conventional packaging for components without the need to accomodate the speakers, thus as shown on the better component units, you can use better, and more robust parts in them.
As far as handle setups, the Sanyo C-9 wins hands down. Anyone who has a C-7 or C-9 knows what I'm talking about. Once assembled it feels and weighs like a solid gold ingot. So yes, though there are some that are "loosey goosey", the better units are rock solid when assembled.
As for which sounds the best? Subjective as always. I have a Sharp GX-300, that while at the Sunshine Mix meet decided to toast its crossover networks, (yes it has real crossovers in the speakers, not a mod), when working properly will go blow for blow with a 'Funken and can out punch it. Someone mentioned HiFi Tom...The GX-300 is a DIN45500 standard box and bears the label of approval. It really is that damn good.
Ultimately...to each his own. That's what makes this hobby so great.

Gx300 better than a jvcm90 no chance, while a good box the m90 is in a different legue to the gx300

Granted...I like anyone agree the JVC's deck and tuner sections are excellent. But this Sharp is very, very, very good in these areas as well.
So...all factors given...on hardware, power and sound alone, the GX wins. Yeah, you're right, the M-90 is NOT in the GX-300's class.
(On looks though...I'll give big ups for those blue woofs of the M-90 set against the gunmetal gray shell. )
